Guava leaf eating bug.
« on: May 08, 2016, 09:48:49 AM »
Something is eating the leaves of my guava tree. I've tried to but could never find the culprit. What shall I do stop it?

Look at night.

They may not be your problem but my lychees, and feijoa get decimated by white weevils and May beetles after dark. Caterpillars can disguise themselves REALLY well look closely for them.

The top leaves at each branch is eaten. I thought it must be something that is able to fly. Even at night I couldn't find anything. I'll keep checking.

May be grasshoppers.  They love to eat younger leaves.

I think you may be right. Saw a grasshopper in the vicinity today. If only I would've caught it red handed.

I doubt it is work of weevils, grasshoppers, or caterpillars. The leaf eating pattern is more consistent with night time beetles. Whatever species you might have. I have and had similar issue. You may never catch them red handed. They do the damage and next visit mighty only be after a month. My situation is slightly different because I have lots of other greenery around. Yours looks more urban area, so they might be due for more frequent visits.  First two hours after dark is more favorable to catch them in action.
