Tasting @ Harrys 6/30/12
« on: June 30, 2012, 06:39:45 PM »
Met up today 6/30/12 at with Harry, Sleepdoc and his friend plus Russ Kaplan at Harry's Farm for an excellent fruit tasting. We tried at least 15 mango cultivars plus my Marisa Abiu, two Jakruit cultivars and some fresh mangosteens that Russ brought over. Nice weather and as always, Harry is a top notch host.  Great time had by all! All of you rare fruiters need to make a pilgramage to Harry's Mango Mecca....

Looks like you guys had a nice day! That's really a chance that Harry's Carrie seedling turned out to be really good and somewhat superior to his parent.

What a fruit feast! Thanks for posting. I would do a Hari-Kari just to get to taste a Harry-Carrie.  ;)

Was the inside better looking than the outside?

Those mangosteens were the absolute worst excuse for fresh mangosteens I have ever had.  The color was way off, the fruits were miniscule, the exteriorrs were hard as rock and the interior was a gamboged mess.  I short, the answer to your question is an emphatic......NO.

Thanks for having us Harry !

This was my first time trying mangosteen, and I do have to say,  I was not impressed.  But I am sure it was not a good representation of mangosteen, and I look forward to trying a good one someday.

I was impressed with a Maha Chanok mango that Russ brought.  It held top honors at the tasting table.  It was the best Maha that I have tried thus far ( I haven't tried more than 4 or so).  #2 was probably one of my Angie mango's that Harry actually ate down to the seed :).   A surprise was I Florigon that I brought to the table.  Maybe held spot 3 or 4.  Normally it wouldn't place near the top, but for some reason, this one was really good.

Noel brought some really tasty Abiu.  I was surprised/impressed.  It was a nice change from the usual mango fare.  It was large and meaty, with little to no latex, and nicely flavored.  If I had room for another tree, I would not be opposed to planting one .

Overall another really great day !

Harry, thanks for a wonderful day.  It was great to meet you, Russel, and Noel.  For a newbie like me, it was a lot of first experiences and new tastes.   ;D

In the end, it will probably be a very costly day.  I have already spent a few hours on house listing websites, trying to find a suitable 2+ acre property.

Lucky so and so!  Why buy a house near Harry, maybe he'll just rent space under one of his mango trees (it is FL after all)?

thanks for the tease,
-Ethan
