How does Kent and Ewais do with diseases? Im possibly moving to FL soon, and don't want to spray to have productive mango trees.

Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Kent fruits consistently for me.  Can a have an issue with internal break down.  Anthracnose can also make the exteriors of the fruits imperfect......but not too bad.  Ewais seems pretty resistant but has not fruited consistently for me.  This year, it is one of the few mango trees that has not bloomed.....as of yet anyway.

The breakdown is a deal breaker for me. It's like mixing snot with mango flavoring. That's a major part of why the kent didn't make the team in my 18 mango line-up. But, I suppose you could probably mitigate the issue by harvesting the fruit early and letting it table ripen for a week or two.

Hi Jeff,  I was wondering what your 18 mango line-up is? Can you list them? Thanks,  Dave

40-41 is a kent x beverly cross. Edgar is an Edward x Gary cross. I believe the former was selected by Gary Zill and the latter by his brother Walter.

I just realized that like 80% of my mango trees are Zill selections :-).

40-41, Edgar?

My wife and I really liked it. Hard to describe. Sweet and tart with a creamy texture and a little bit of spice from memory.

Jeff, do you plan to propagate and sell Edgar?    Please say yes.

I think it was my favorite of those I tasted last summer.

(I have not yet tasted many of the fine mangos being grown by forum members, so am not making any claims for Edgar.)

Did you mention the words "wife" and "liked" and "tart" in the same sentence?????

HAHAHAH I know. Normally she doesn't like tart fruits, but this is a very mild tart. She's also super fond of both the dot and the pina colada, both of which have a fairly strong tart. Yet, she calls Edwards "puro limon" because they are too acid. Go figure.

Sometimes I scratch my head at the fruits she considers 'sweet'. Tonight she came home with a giant bag of palestine sweet limes and has been gorging on them. She says they're sweet, but to me they taste like bitter drinking water -- absolutely no flavor. Yet, she considers the glenn to be a really poor mango because it has no flavor.

My wife and I really liked it. Hard to describe. Sweet and tart with a creamy texture and a little bit of spice from memory.

HAHAHA I actually haven't done much in the way of grafting for quite some time. I'm trying to clear out the stuff I already have. Your best bet is to just grab a chunk of budwood from Walter and graft yourself a tree. Or, you could get Har to topwork one of your existing trees. I actually topworked 1/3 of my bigger keitt with it.

Last summer Walter agreed to topwork my Graham to an Edgar, but I'm afraid my phone number has made its way to the bottom of his pile.  I'm a little intimidated by the gods of mangodom,  but I'll gird my loins and try again.

It seems like a lot of Zill selections are Gary x  something else. I'm pretty psyched to try my first Gary mango.  My Gary tree is blooming fairly well right now. Keeping my fingers crossed.
