Looks awesome. Is it a real passionfruit or a relative? What's the flavour like?

It is not a passion fruit and I don't think it is related. It is a melon that has passion fruit qualities. It has a sweet butterscotch taste. The fruits have a diameter of around 5 - 6 inches.

Technically 2 but only one is flowering. The other is not as mature. Both plants escaped from my shade house by rooting into the ground and climbing a pole. They are growing limestone gravel.

yea they are a bit invasive, i have one taking over my patio. I was just curious if you were getting good fruit production with one plant. Hardy vine growing in limestone gravel.

How good a fruit are they? I recall growing a south American vine that was full of promise and eagerly waited for the fattening fruit to ripen. Those fruit didn't live up to expectations.

Maybe like you, I read reports of this being one of the best fruit a botanical explorer had tasted and had very high expectations.  I found the link, http://www.rareseeds.com/adventures-of-the-botanical-explorer-series/  Unfortunately, the flavor profile is not one that I truly appreciate in any food, sweet with no acidity, butterscotch.  I enjoy the fruit. It is easy to grow. The three people that I gave the fruit to for sampling all liked it more than me, I think.

What south American vine was that? Is it one from J. West by any chance?

Ok thanks. I think casabanana has great melony taste, but they are so seedy. Would be great if they are juiced and seeds filtered out.

I also have a large sprawling vine that has escaped the hothouse, actually punched a hole through the plastic somehow and escaped into the surrounding trees. Winter has just arrived and has appeared to have induced it into flower. So you got fruit from only ONE flowering vine? NOT two? Must have 100 flowers just starting to form.

Yes, I had male and female flowers on the same branch.

That's fantastic, because I pulled three vines and left one, I  was over the mass of vines covering everything in it's path.. Admittedly, I left the strongest vine, close to 2 inches thick at the base.
Did winter bring yours into flower? Oh, and how long between flower and fruit?

It took just over 2 months from the time the first male flowers were spotted until the first fruit was harvested.  I still have a couple ready fruit last time I looked, three months after first harvest, but things are definitely wrapping up with dieback of the fruiting branches.  I did see some developing fruit, but  I am not sure if that is the second vine starting to come online.

Great to find out it's a quick to mature fruit as well, the interest has gone up a notch or two. My winters can get down to minimums of 40F overnight, the entire vine has just started to flower and it will be interesting to see  if they develop or go to mush. Thanks for all your help, there's very little info in cyberspace on this species. BTW, for the interest of others wanting to grow this vine, it's in the curcurbitaceae family, so not even closely related to passionfruit, it got it' name from an explorer who thought it look similar to passionfruit.

Do you have melon fruit fly in Australia? It tends to attack cucurbits when the fruits are just starting to form. Not sure if it will attack this fruit, but just something to watch for. You might have to bag it.

i had one last year
pretty agressive vine.
it never did flower though.

Do you need to fertilize it ?
How old does it need to be to flower ?

do you know cold tolerance ?
I am wondering if it will come back this year.
