I didn't like the atemoyas I tasted from the Irvine research station for the last few years but I heard from others that they were very good, especially the African Pride which is huge. Will definitely try to make it to the annual tasting event next year, I think March or April.

Tim

you sound very knowledgable about these mang cau
would you please tell me the differences between: Gefner, Lisa, African Pride, Pinks Mammoth, etc. I only learned of these names after I joined this forum about a month ago

thanks

So, are we meeting?  If yes, where & when?

I can bring some Vietnamese food/fruits to the meeting as well :)

I live in GG & can volunteer my backyard for the meeting/experimenting (you're welcomed to graft onto my trees if you wanted to :)  I have in-ground atemoya/longan/wax jambu/persimmon/lemon/lychee/avocado trees that I think are graft-able).  Do make sure you bring everything because I've never grafted anything and do not have any supplies just yet.

Great, thanks for volunteering your backyard for this. How about the 18th? It's in the middle of the month.

I have grafting tapes and parafilm and buddy tape to share but only one budding knife. Hopefully someone else has another grafting knife or sharp buxcutter or utility knife.

I have these scions: cherimoya , atemoya , lychee, longan

I have two budknives, that I can bring. Just need some alcohol or bleach solution to sterlize. August 18th in Garden Grove, works perfectly. Garden Grove is a nice central location for LA, Orange, and San Diego counties.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

What time do you think is best for this meeting & for how long?

Oh, are we supposed to buy the lucumas that morning? If we do then I have 2 seedlings to practice on. I'm not sure if they're large enough.

I might have a graftable cherimoya seedling as well. It'll have to match with a small scion.

For cherimoya/atemoya/sugar apple just leave the scions in a glass of water at room temperture. For other tropical fruits I don't know how long scions will keep for and I don't know whether or not they can withstand cold storage in the fridge like apple and pears can. Grafting as soon as possible is the preferred method.

MMMMommy, let us know if you're available that day and what time works. Thanks.

I believe the Gefner and Lisa are the varieties that bear sufficient fruit without hand pollenation; the others require hand pollenation for sufficient fruit.

I will bring a sugar apple tree and some scions for Atemoya, but I don't know how to havest/collect the scion, Would someone please post a clear photo of the scion. Thanks

I also bought some grafting tapes and would healing spray. I don't know if it's the right tape, but the salesperson told me it is

ps. I have never grafted or seen grafting materials in my life, I watched Youtuble, and read around, then I went to buy the tapes and the spray, not sure if they are the right stuff
I will also bring 2 cherimoya tree, smaller than pencil size, but that's all I could find, not sure if they are big enough for grafting yet

For once something fun happens around here, I'm stuck somewhere else. I sure wish I could come but I'm booked until early September for work and personal obligations.

After this grafting party, you guys might want to organize a post-grafting party a couple of months later to check the works.  ;D  I'm keeping that time frame clear just in case...

I keep forgetting to take pictures showing where to cut. I'll try to remember that this weekend. I live in an apartment during the week. Basically not the green part and not the really woody part.

MMMMommy was okay with using her place in Garden Grove and she was checking whether the 18 was a good time for her.
