Hi Fruit Lovers!

Just wanna let you know about a new durian tour in far eastern Thailand that's focused on the earlier season varieties -- usually our tour focuses on mid-late season varieties so I'm pretty excited that we get to share durians like Dao Kra Jai, Sai Nam Phung, Phungmanee, Chanee and Chanee Khai, Kradumthong and other Kradums, and a few other varieties.

It's also still mango season, so we will stop at a mango farm for a Thai mango degustation and also look for maprang varieties.

The tour is only 6 days, from April 27 - May 2nd and the pricing depends on how many people sign up.

Many people have success growing durian on the Big Island and people are trying all over! I've actually heard of others growing durian in Hawaiian Acres as a backyard tree.

As mentioned your rainfall is higher than durians *LOVE* but still okay. I think you have all the conditions for durian to survive, but I'm not sure how much fruit it will bear. It's really about whether or not you get any dry spells of more than 3 weeks so the durians get stressed enough to flower. Consistent rain and they won't flower and won't make fruit and then you just have a beautiful tree. It's worth a shot though!

Also watch out cuz volcanic soil usually needs some amendments for durians to flower and be happy. I think (and you guys who are real agriculturalists can double check this) that volcanic soils are usually low in magnesium, and since Durios are native to granite soils with lots of agate, they need magnesium amendments to flower properly. Just some thoughts! 

Linday that was me due to them being the farthest north growing durians in Thailand, the elevated nature of Laplae village and presumed winter minimums which are a good deal lower than nearby Uteraditt according to local Thais.It makes then candidates for testing.Kradom Thong is grown on the chantarak basalt soils in the north east but this probably only has winter minimums of 6 or 7c.

They are the furthest north, but the elevation of Laplae district is only a little over 200 feet, so it's not very high. The average low temperature is 64 F (18), which compares to Chanthaburi's 70 F (21.5). Do you think this is a big enough temp difference to make them "cold hardy?"

If anything is interesting, my impression is that Uttaradit has a longer dry period than other durian growing areas. Anybody know anything about it?

It is a gorgeous area, that's for sure. Super steep mountains vs. flatlands we find in Chanthaburi/Rayong growing areas.
