Title: Multiroostock grafting into branches
Post by: Jose Spain on December 11, 2017, 01:17:19 PM
I don't know if this grafting method have been already discussed in the forum, I couldn't find it. It's one of the weirdest ways to graft I've ever seen, instead of grafting cv into the rootstock, this method grafts several rootstocks into a cv branch, by using just their roots, like some kind of an air layering/grafting hybrid technique. By doing so, these guys get big plants with several main roots to feed the new tree.

It is crazy they didn't even line up the cambium. They just slapped the rootstock onto the big slices. I wonder if these survived or thrived. You could also just graft together some nice healthy root pruned rootstocks and graft it normally and watch it take of like a rocket.

It also got my attention that they don't even try to match cambium, but it must work, because there are several videos showing the method, like this one:

An another variant with younger stuff and using part of the stem along with the root:

When we graft similar sized branches, we need to cut into the branches. This gives 2 thin lines of cambium. We need to line up 1 side to match the cambium.

In the video, the guy removed a big chunk of bark from a big branch. Left on the big branch was a big sheet of cambium. He did not need to line up the rootstock.

The difference is sheet of cambium versus 2 thin lines of cambium.
