Citrus General Discussion / Re: Last year for my xie shan
« on: August 27, 2021, 05:15:56 AM »
So glad I didn't trash my Xie Shan, 7 yrs old and and has wonderful fruit. I started a commercial grove in 2010 and planted 200 xie shan in 2014 they are very productive and taste great, just takes a long time to get quality fruit.  Planted 400 more in 2018 so it's going to be a while before going to market. Keep in mind satsumas don't require as much nitrogen as most citrus.

Excellent piece of fruit and when grown in Georgia it is not alternate bearing,  it doesn't bear at all!

My experience with Iwasaki over the last two years has shown that it is no more vigorous then Xie Shan or Miho Wase, all are on Rich 16-6 and have been planted two years.

Hey guys thanks for all the great info, the xie shans will be spared! They are to many folks bragging on the xs for it not to be a good cultivar. I know from experience that fd rootstock will produce superior quality satsuma fruit, at least on brown select and owari that are on trifoliate,  probably any mandarin. Wow can you imagine what a kishu would taste like on fd! I have some kishus on sour and 16-6 and the ones on 16-6 are at 13 brix or better at thanksgiving the ones on sour have to hang about two more weeks to get 13, and are not quite as rich tasting,  but my gosh they outgrow the 16-6 by 2 to 1. I'm going to order some kishus  on fd to try ,and do the same with xs, again thanks for the info.  Quality is everything.

Indeed , they donot last long on the tree. I filled up my two refrigerators veggie bins and had good fruit till the end of March, the skin was dried up and brown but still tasted good.

Large, puffy, grandular, dry fruit that's what I get off my xie shan. Planted 4 years ago along with brown select, miho, okitsu and owari,  all in ground and all received the same treatment and fertilizer. Great fruit from all but the xie shan, I am not going to fertilizer the xie shan this year and see if that helps, if not it's going to the burn pile. Would not recommend the xie shan.

I have read so many good things about the seedless kishu but never having tasted one, I found some online in California and ordered a box, quite  expensive by  the way, well they live up to all the hype . BEST piece of fruit I have ever had. Didn't find a seed in the entire box, so very easy to peel with a acid to sweet balance that is perfect, nice rich complex flavor,  much better then the clementine, my question is why are they not available in grocery stores? Seems to me that the commercial growers would jump all over this fruit.

I'm trying to decide which of these two to purchase. Artic frost or Orange frost. Anyone having knowledge of the fruit, your opinion would be very helpful in my decision.  I prefer the sweetest and most seedless of the two.

Thanks for the replies, very interesting and informative. I going to get a Tango to put in the hoop house, should be the American version of the Nadorcott.

I have read a lot of good things about the Nadorcott, folks seem to love them. Seems they are widely grown in South America and South Africa, can anyone give their opinion on them also are the trees available in the U.S.A.

I am certain the beetles I have are ambrosia beetles, I have not seen your tree, however your beetles are most likely not ambrosia since you stated they are 12 ft. high and they are so many of them and there is no frass protruding from the bark. also they like smaller trees. That being said the spray can method should still work, just a lot more holes to spray.

They are ambrosia beetles and they will kill your citrus tree. They have also attacked my weakened citrus trees. spraying of the trunk and limbs will not kill the bugs, the chemicals cannot reach them, take a spray can of permethrin based spray and put a small straw on the nozzle, wear safety glasses and spray directly into each bored hole, after knocking the sawdust off.  The beetles are only about a half inch into the hole. I use Bengal Roach Spray, 2% permethrin and it comes with the straw do this ASAP or you will lose the tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Citrus Sub Forum???

Just joined this forum, moved over from the citrus forum. A citrus sub forum on this site would be great!!! I am growing citrus, mangos and papayas in a greenhouse and cold hardy citrus in ground, this would be a great fit.
