Citrus General Discussion / What is This?
« on: June 01, 2015, 09:16:47 PM »
I was walking through the garden center at Wal Mart this morning and saw some small citrus trees. One
of them was labeled Variegated Pink Lemon.

Anyone ever heard of this?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What Might This Be?
« on: May 28, 2015, 08:57:13 PM »
This popped up 2 days ago and I have no idea what it is. The 2nd photo shows the seed pod laying beside the plant.

Any ideas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / To Cut or Not to Cut???
« on: May 12, 2015, 07:02:03 PM »
I have a Musa Dwarf Orinoco Banana plant that is about 4 feet tall and it has a sucker (pup)
that has appeared. Should I cut it off or just let it grow?

TIA

My Carrie is holding only 2 mangoes this year and my Nam Doc Mai only 5 (2 of which probably won't make it).

Thank goodness my Kent came through:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Recommendations Please
« on: August 09, 2014, 02:44:54 PM »
A few weekends ago, after attending Mango Mania, I drove over to Treehouse Nursery to purchase a Lemon Zest. The only one they had left is in the photos (7 Gal).
I wasn't too thrilled with the shape but figured I could cut it back to get it to fill out.

One of the branches was pretty much straight up so I cut it back to 3" above the fork (sorry....I didn't take a before shot). As you can see, it already has new growth
on the branch that was cut. I would like to cut back the other branch and was wondering: Should I cut the 2nd branch 3" above the fork or go a little higher? Any other
recommendations welcomes.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pine Island Haul
« on: July 19, 2014, 05:28:11 PM »
I attended the Mango Mania today and was Puglvr ever right about it being hot and humid. I must say that I was less than impressed.
The mango variety was not what I was expecting and I later spoke with a local who said this year was disappointing.

Fortunately, I decided to make a run over to Tree House and Truly Tropical as well as another place near them where some folks had quite
a few varieties in buckets on their front porch. I purchased a 7 Gal LZ at Tree House (the only one they had) and learned that their nursery
is up for sale.

Here's my haul:

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What's Missing
« on: May 18, 2014, 08:34:12 PM »
I just noticed that some of the leaves on my MC are a greenish-yellow around the outer edges. It's not
the look of fertilizer burns but more like a lack of a nutrient (sorry - too dark to get a picture).

Any thoughts as to what's missing?

Thanks!
Michael

how long did it take to receive them?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Container Soil for Young Mangosteen?
« on: February 23, 2014, 06:56:10 PM »
I have read information from several sites that recommend Loam( Sand/Clay/Silt). I haven't seen anyone on
line that carries this and don't have the ingredients available in my area (to my knowledge). The plant is about
2 years old (3 feet tall) and will be in a container and shaded. Suggestions greatly appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trip to Pine Island
« on: November 18, 2013, 07:30:40 PM »
I made a quick run down to Pine Island today and visited the Treehouse Nursery. I was blown away seeing
so many gorgeous tropical fruit trees. I was looking for a 7 Gal Biew Kiew and they must have had at least 40.
Next to them were 50 - 1007 Gal Lychees. Mago trees were everywhere and I can't wait to get back down to
check them out.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Clearing Up the Confusion
« on: November 16, 2013, 08:41:03 PM »
Earlier I posted that TT has one 3 Gal  Biew Kiew longan left. Apparently, admin thought I was trying to
make a sale as my post was deleted.

Please know that I don't work for or have any affiliation with TT. I am a social worker in St. Petersburg, Florida and
had been looking to buy a  Biew Kiew. I just happened to see that they had 2 for sale. I purchased one and thought
I would share my find if anyone else was looking.

My apologies if my post appeared to be sales related.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pomegranate Growers?
« on: October 31, 2013, 09:12:12 PM »
Any Pomegranate tree growers here?

I just purchased a small Sirenevyi from Green Sea Farms and it arrived today, just
as it was getting dark. From what I could see, it looks very healthy as it only took
one day to get here.

I plan to keep it pruned to have a tree rather than bush shape and would appreciate any
tips regarding fertilizer, etc.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Curling Lychee Leaves

My Lychee tree has some new leaves that are curling. Could this be too much or too little water or something else?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / pH

I checked both of my potted mangoes the other day and the pH of both
was right at 7. Should I sprinkle a little sulfur or is 7 okay?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / When To Begin Fertilizing Mangoes
« on: September 21, 2013, 07:29:49 PM »
When you receive a 3, 5 or 7 gallon mango and leave it in a container of potting soil, at what point do you begin adding fertilizer? I have a LZ and MC that won't be planted until next year and want to insure that I don't under or over fertilize until than.

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New Family Member

I ordered a Maha Chanok from Top Tropical and received a notice yesterday that it had shipped. I arrived home today to find
it on my front porch. T.T. stated that it was large for a 3 gallon and they were right - it's 39" from base of the tree to the top.

Directly behind the Maha is my NDM. In the background between the 2 trees is my Scuppernong grape arbor. Directly behind the
pine tree is a key lime and to the far left is a Kent.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What's This?

I noticed some yellow spots on the top side of my Lychee leaves (Photo #1) and when I turned them over,
I discovered these white spots on the underside (Photo #2). Sorry about the quality of the shots; it was getting
dark quickly.

What is it and how should I treat it?

Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / New member of the Family
« on: July 27, 2013, 06:09:10 PM »
Added a Lemon Zest to the mango family this week. Purchased a 3 gal. from TopTropicals which was shipped on Thursday and was sitting on my front porch when I arrived home Friday afternoon. Fortunately, we're both in Florida and the tree arrived with the root ball moist and the leaves green and flexible. Hopefully, they won't shed due to the fast delivery.

I potted the tree this morning and placed it under my grape arbor to keep it shaded for a few days. The tree is 27" tall so I'll have to rely on my other trees for fruit for some time to come. Her's the Lemon Zest removed from the shipping box and my other trees:
