What is the best late season mango?
« on: June 01, 2018, 09:47:05 AM »
Hey guys I'm in search for a great mango that is late season. I've read cotton candy is a great variety. Also if you have one for sale I'm interested. Thank you!

Keitt is ye old school reliable. If you cannot find any of the new improved Zill etc. at your nursery or Excalibur then Keitt is solid and easy to find for sale. One year I picked Keitt as late as October 10th. But Keitt routinely runs August into September. My keitt tree is loaded and dripping this year. Photos on request.

I would love to see your photos. What does your keitt taste like? I hear some people say it's their favorite while others say it bland.. What do you think?

Keitt would be my favorite as an all around late season pick. The flavor is good (not quite excellent), but finding an excellent tasting mango that consistently produces late season is a challenge. Production is consistent and heavy. In Florida, crops can last until October in some years, but September crops are a sure bet.

Keitt can be extremely disease resistant, and it can also be very disease prone. I've seen both. But in a dooryard scenario, it tends more towards being disease resistant. I have had problems with MBBS, but a hard pruning seams to have solved the issue.

One thing to keep in mind when selecting a late season mango is that you can't be overly choosy. You are already selecting based upon a genetic rarity (a mango that produces late). Combining that with the other desirable but rare characteristics (eg, high production, good disease resistance, excellent flavor, etc) means even longer odds that you'll find a winner in the genetic lottery. So, typically we compromise a bit on flavor, which is why most late season mangoes are "good" (vs excellent).

Keitt has old Florida mango full flavor roughly like a Kent or Haden mango.  No intense sweetness like many of the new Zill mangoes

:) Nice pics of mangos  :)
Agree, Keitt is a great late season mango. I am still enjoying frozen Keitt from the freezer as so far even unthawed, they are IMO superior in flavor to my early season mangos this year except for maybe Florigon.

False. Adding "is amenable to container cultivation" to the selection criteria narrows list of choices pretty dramatically. I only know of a couple of cultivars that can be grown successfully in a container. Dwarf Hawaiian would be my favorite for container cultivation.

Zands, Gold Nugget is one of my favorite mangos. I almost lost my tree to gummosis after Irma but I hacked all the infected branches off and it’s just starting to come back nicely. Your tree looks healthy. Is there any recommendations you can offer me as far as care for this cultivar? How old is yours? Thanks

Bought at Home Depot and planted 2012. I have tip pruned it every year. It has kept a nice size. It's not a "vigorous grower". Neelam can be flaky with variable tastes. Best thing I can say is you might have to wait for Neelam to get into its own. So wait it out. Two years ago (2016) I had a v good neelam harvest. Last year minimal. This year it is the most "dripping" mango tree I have had in any year.

Gold nugget planted 2011 and bought at Home Depot. I have no special advice except be patient and give it good amount of mulch. Fertilize too. Though mulching only, I have not given this tree any chem fertilizer for three years. Last year yield was minimal but it made up for it this year, it is loaded. The photo I posted does not do it justice.

Gummosis here is normally a nutritional problem, typically lack of copper. Cutting back a tree with gummosis could make the problem worse, as leaves which stored nutrients are now gone. Make sure the tree is well fertilized.

My neelam is 4 years old planted as a 3 gallon and is dripping also with around 80 fruits.   I’m worried I should have thinned fruit.

Interesting, never heard of those varieties before (Taiwan gold, Sam run du). How's the flavor and production?
Wouldn't mind trying then out here. I'll check around.
