Title: Best Persimmon tree to buy
Post by: TooFarNorth on December 04, 2018, 09:45:24 AM
Hi, all.  I am planning on planting a Asian persimmon this winter.  I am looking at Fuyu types, but am confused.  I want a large flavorful fruit that in non astringent.  Upon reading descriptions, it depends on where you read as to which is best  I was thinking about getting the Hana Fuyu.   I have only tasted Fuyu. Do any of you have a favorite?  Please help me decide, I need to get my order in.

Thanks,
TFN

If you could find rojo brillante in the USA that will be a great cultivar to have. The fruit is large and non astringent.

My issue with non-astringent persimmons is they are NOT flavorful, just sweet.
By contrast, even wild American Persimmons have an amazing, complex flavor when past the astringent stage.

I grew up eating wild persimmons.  I like them very much.  I have only recently tasted a Fuyu and found it to be flavorful and sweet, though not as complex as the wild ones.  I did like the texture too.

Cool!
yeah i have not tasted a LOT of non-astringent types, so I'm no expert.

What I said above is just my current position :)   Everyone has their own tastes for sure!

Here in Europe, specialized nurseries sell tens of cultivars, common nurseries sell few basic japanese persimons (d. kaki) like:

Hana Fuyu
Giant Fuyu
Vainiglia
Tipo
Rojo Brillante

sometimes Jiro, or Cioccolatino.

I have Hana Fuyu and Tipo in greenhouse, this year I bought Cioccolatino, which is very good pollinator. Here in zone 6 it is lottery to grow d. kaki outdoor, This is why those, who want to grow kaki outdoor are focusing on crosses of japan persimmon and american persimmon, which are more frost hardy like

Nikita´s Gift (D. Kaki x Roseyanka)
Roseyanka (D. Kaki x D. Virginiana)

And many others ussualy breeded in Ukraine.

Prok is a cold hardy variety that is well regarded but it’s astringent.

Rojo Brilliante looks intriguing, but may be impossible to find here in the states.  Would Giombo be a good alternative for a good astringent variety?

I can recommend Hana Fuyu, heavy bearer, sweet, no need pollinator.

Thanks, forumfool.  I need to get a tree or two to have something to graft to first.

Radoslav, thanks for the recommendation.  I have about decided on Hana Fuyu for my non astringent.  Now to find a great astringent one.  I'm thinking of Giombo, and perhaps graft a Rojo Brilliante later.

Rojo Brillante is astringent. And widely regarded as one of the best.
And available here in the US. Just Fruits and Exotics carries them in the fall.

If you dont have Saijo yet, it is a MUST HAVE. Also astringent and exceptionally flavored. Another one to have is Nikita's gift: which has a rich flavor and also very sweet.

Dumb question-How big do these get?

About 10-15 feet tall and across. They can be smaller with pruning.

Try Israeli Persimmon. Their fruits taste pretty much similar to fuyu but with a sandy (hard bubbled) texture and has a slight fragrant. I agreeed with many others that fuyu has no fragrant or a real flavor of persimmon at all; however, it is nearly impossible to find a good tast persimmon tree in my State beside fuyu.

If by israeli persimmon we are talking about Triumph (that is a treated fruit of the astringent variety Sharon) is a poor variety in my opinion. Poor colour also, maturing to light orange at most. I have Rojo brillante and is a great astringent variety with big acorn shaped fruits that must be eaten soft and as is name says, when scarlet red. Like a soft tomato.

Tomatero is an old spanish variety, smaller but said to be more sweet.

Coroa de rei and Hachiya are also very good and extra big, but I don't have experience with those still. Too young still to bear fruit.

Trees are in 100liters pots, no problem with fruiting.
