Top off?
« on: November 24, 2013, 12:03:54 PM »
I've never had good luck with pruning Sapodilla. This is a Hasya- he's looking good. I have not gotten any fruit yet - he is almost 2 years in the ground.
My question is- should I prune the straight branch at the top?

beautiful tree!

yes! don't be scared to prune it!

these nursery grown plants are even more susceptible to wind damage!

yes ma'am. I'd probably be even a bit more aggressive and nip it at around 5 feet tall at a good location where the tree has already branched out. Most saps take a few years to start producing. The exceptions being the precocious cultivars like makok and silas woods.

I trimmed my hasya about three months ago because it did the same thing.

The Jury is in- will give it a topping.

My other Sapodilla was so prolific-fruited in the first year. I hope this Hasya fruit is worth the wait!

Maybe wait until February to top it off. The tree is not growing now. It will heal better and grow out better from the cut you made.....in the spring. Say late February.

Others will know better on this. If you are afraid of winds snapping it and harming your tree then strip off all or some of the leaves and top it off in February

I tend to agree with Zands.  Little risk of winds snapping the tree in my opinion.  Much higher risk of freeze damage taking the upright growth.  Nothing to really be gained by pruning now. I vote for a February/march hair cut.

LOL, I didnt see the Harry and Zands posts until now....too late, he's been beheaded. I think its hard to kill a Sapodilla, so I think he'll heal fine
