Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Most worthwhile subtropical fruits to grow?
« on: December 04, 2020, 01:31:05 AM »
I would put guava in the list.  Live in 9b AZ and we have hit 27 and the guava only had minor die back.  Much hardier than mangoes.
Google low chill stone fruit.  I have an Anna apple that gets loaded with fruit and makes incredible apple pies.  Sun red nectarine, beauty plum, burgundy beauty plum, methely plum, Asian pears many low chill peach varieties should do great.

Not sure about taste, but I think mango and sunflower are southern range varieties.
I think most of the named varieties are pretty good.

I think the problem with the ones I bought are maybe that they are overripe.

Ok, that is good to know.  This one had no complex flavor. No tartness.  Just sweet and orange flavor.  The rest tasted like water.
The fruit i bought doesn't sound typical, so I'll let my tree grow and try it's fruits.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Eugenias
« on: November 20, 2020, 12:19:37 AM »
I am really interested in eugenias.  They are a good size for my back yard and I love how they look.
They are not the easiest to locate, so, I would like to I would to narrow varieties I want to purchase.
Currently I have corg nelita, savannah cherry, pitomba, grumichama, e. Ligustrina, rainforest plum, a couple pitanga's,  and cedar bay cherry.
Any recommendations on other varieties to add?
I am pretty, only interested in eating fruit out of hand.  Not interested in making a juice or anything like that.
Thanks for advice!

Citrus General Discussion / Question on Kishu mandarins
« on: November 20, 2020, 12:09:19 AM »
I have a kishu mandarin in my backyard.  It has not fruited yet and I was curious to see how the fruit tastes.  So, I bought a box of them online.  They looked cool and were the size I expected.  Very easy to peel....but, I was very disappointed in the flavor.  It was sweet, but, besides that fairly bland.
Just wanted to see what other people think of the fruit.  Did I just get a bad batch or is this what I am to expect from the fruit.
If it always this bland, I may take the tree down and plant something better.

Got plant in mail today.  It was thoughtfully and professionally packaged.  Arrived in perfect condition and it was larger than I expected.  Thanks Kevin!

Can any of your plants take frost?  My place can gow down to -3C.

I had purchased a lemon guava on clearance a few years back.  I had heard it had a pleasant lemony flavor.  Well the one I have basically tastes like dirt.  Absolutely horrible.
I had eventually planned on purchasing a strawberry guava, but, decided not too due to the lemon guava fruits.
Did i just get a bad plant or do they all taste horrible.  Are strawberry guava fruit good?  And, are their improved varieties for sale?  Thanks.

I always heard they split from uneven watering.
So, if you water everyday. You have to keep watering everyday.
Or, if you do once a week, you must continue once a week.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Tropical cherry fruit?

I tried capulin cherry.  It is a cherry, but i think it is an acquired taste.  Tried some from a friend that was an improved variety, but to me it tasted horrible, much to my dismay.
Supposedly Catalina Island cherries do well and i am sure they would grow there, but i hear they are mostly all seed.
Would be nice if someone could select them for more flesh and good flavor.

None of those will taste like a cherry.  I actually think Jamaican cherry tastes better than.a real cherry, but, the fruit is small and birds love them.
There are 3 true cherry types that are low chill.  I am not sure how many hours a year you get under 45 in the keys, but Minnie royal, royal Lee pollinate each other and need 2,-300 chill hours.  Royal crimson is ds self fruitful and needs about the same in chill hours.  You can buy them from Dave Wilson.
Also, in northern South America, they are currently trying to make a cherry produce under tropical conditions.  So, maybe oneday we can all have a true cherry.

I looked up different varieties and I ordered a Rosigold from Logee's.  While no one listed it as best tasting, I did read a lot of good comments on the flavor.  But, the thing I noted is that a lot of the smaller mangoes had some drawbacks when I looked into it.  Rosigold seemed to be a heavy producer and stays very small.

a local nursery is selling this in a 5 gallon container.  Since I am a suckered for fruits and berries, can I get a taste report on these berries?  I have limited space and I don't want to plant anything edible that isn't  very tasty.

Would appreciate any help.

I have heard bad reviews on the Mexican cream guava from the big box stores.  I bought on eBay from guavaking.  Wouldn't surprise me if he is a board member.  But, bought it a month ago and it is doing great in the AZ summer.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What is your favorite banana variety?
« on: June 02, 2020, 02:36:53 AM »
I don't have any trouble with the heat or cold in Scottdale,  AZ.  It is more finding an area in our clay soil where the roots get good drainage.  I finally have an ice cream banana and a dwrf green banana with some size, just no fruit yet.  I tried and killed about 5 ice cream bananas before I found a spot it likes.
