As someone mentioned citrus does fine based on where it is grown.

These are at my BIL's place just north of SA.

Pictures are of Grapefruit X Orange on the south side of the house and Calamondin on the north side of the house.
They also have banana, avocado, figs, jujube. During a severe winter you may loose some limbs on some of these except for Jujube.

I have also seen Satsuma and Meyer lemon growing quite successfully in the ground around SA.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Do you like jujube fruit?
« on: April 05, 2018, 06:26:08 AM »
Thank you all for replies.
I read that jujube tastes like dates which I do not like. But I read quite a few posts with people loving this fruit and comparing it with really good apple which I love...so let’s give it a try. Honey jar - I am coming to adopt you into a loving home.   :)

They taste nothing like dried dates to me. Perhaps dried Jujubes do. I have not tried those. I do like dates and would be happy if they did.

As others may have mentioned here are a couple of things to keep in mind with Honey Jar and most Jujubes;

1. They root sucker a bit, so you will see the rootstock pop-up in your garden.
2. They are thorny, including the rootstock
3. The fruit is relatively small

Given those I'll still grow them any day!

Try eating the fruit with a light beer or white wine ;)

If you like sweet you may want to consider Honey Jar. It is sweet and is juicier than others I grow.
Only negatives to Honey Jar is the fruit size and perhaps the thorns. They are relatively small.

Thank you both!

I found the male scion.

I have read that the female trees hold fruit only after a few years. I was being impatient and wanted a male to pollinate while the female tree matured.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is my Isan Indigo sugar apple a runt?
« on: March 07, 2018, 06:22:57 AM »
nana7b,
Wow, your seedlings are impressive. How many
seeds did you start with...when did they germinate?
I was going to buy more seeds...but the price is now
$24 for 8 seeds...not including shipping.

I started with 6 seeds and was lucky to get these to sprout. Had only one come up on Richards seeds.
Overall success rate with SA for me has been on the low side. It appears everyone has the same issue.

I think these were started in early October, so they are about 5 months from seed. Germination took about 3-4 weeks.
I had to help a couple with the seed capsule.( to remove it)

Yours looks really good!

Mine are still inside. They have been doing fairly well under a regular LED shop light.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rooting purple mombin cuttings question
« on: February 17, 2018, 11:47:36 AM »
I am trying to root cuttings and currently there is growth that appears to be flower buds.

The question is are those flower buds or leaf buds? If they are flower buds should I remove them?

They have been in the rooting medium about 5 weeks.

Thanks!

That looks like a 7 gallon Kampong Mauve ? Is that correct ? I have a kampong mauve in a 7 gallon squat that gave me 1 fruit during thanksgiving weekend. It set probably half a dozen fruit but over time all but 1 fell off, I'm guessing because the tree is young. I have since assembled a few greenhouses to provide a more humid environment for my annoas. That was my first time trying a sugar apple .  It was good but I think cherimoya beats it hands down. Still waiting to try ilamas and reticulata.

 William

William, this is a Red Sugar Apple. Its 2 yrs old and I believe it is in a 5gal. It made multiple fruits as well and all  turned black and fell off except for one. Unfortunately I was out of town when it ripened. Gave it to my BIL who said it was excellent. Yes, Cherimoya I would say is better, but SA is very good as well and easier to grow in containers.

It would help to have the holes but it would also cause more evaporation and require you to water more often depending how dry your climate is. I have not personally tried drilling holes in my containers. I grow all my tropicals in containers due to my climate.

I have tried the smart pots or fabric pots and plants grow really well in them. The only disadvantage is that it is a bit difficult to remove the plant for up-potting or root pruning. The roots sometimes grow into the fabric and may also grow through it.

As for soil mixes I like ProMix. ProMix HP(high porosity) would be probably good for citrus as they do not like wet feet. Or you can buy ProMix BX and add as much perlite as you like to customize the mix. Eventually you will have to up-pot or root prune and rejuvenate the soil by removing some old mix and adding fresh mix.
