Is my Isan Indigo sugar apple a runt?
« on: March 04, 2018, 10:42:33 PM »

Hi,

This is my Isan Indigo sugar apple.  It germinated on 10-16-2017.  I got 4 out of 6 seeds to germinate.  But some pest
ate the others 3 seedlings.  Does the surviving seedling look like a runt to you?  How's yours looking?

Mine germinated around the same time but with a lower success rate. All but one died I believe due to fungal issues but not for sure. The lone survivor looked like it was a goner when I sprayed it with copper fungicide and it recently pushed new leaves from what appeared to be a dead seedling so your looks much better than mine... sadly that’s not saying much. Hopefully someone else can be of better help.

Not sure what triggers it, time, temperature or maybe day length but sugar apples have a dormancy which stops growth during winter.
No matter what you do they stop. As spring progresses they will awaken and start growing again. Be aware they won't be using much water while dormant so best to leave them on the dry side lest they rot.

Red ‘Noyna’ got somed seed grown also, one was a rundt and eventually died.  My Biriba, Atemoya, and Red Atemoya very vigorous doing well.  Another Red Noyna doing ok, in the ground now.

I got 2 to germinate and they are just starting to grow new leaves. I have a couple
big reds and a couple other ones from a local tree. They all seem to be doing the same thing.
It's just like Pineislander said they all went went dormant this winter. Luckily mine had little
wood trunks and they didn't dampen like some people had issues with. I got some seeds
late in the year from RichardN's Na Dai. I had one germinate in the fall and dampen off. I
was about to give up on the seeds and Raul said they will sprout. Two of them sprouted this
spring so far. Thanks Raul.

I got 1/6 germinated. It looks like it could dry up any day.

Yours is looking great.

Your seedling looks great to me - maybe it's just resting right now.
I have 3 coming up so far, but they are just breaking the soil.

Biggest problem I always seem to have when trying to sprout SA seeds is damping off.  I usually pot with "contaminated" soil and have yet to spray copper on them.

Yours looks really good!

Mine are still inside. They have been doing fairly well under a regular LED shop light.

nana7b,
Wow, your seedlings are impressive. How many
seeds did you start with...when did they germinate?
I was going to buy more seeds...but the price is now
$24 for 8 seeds...not including shipping.

Does this dormancy stage apply to places that do not have a true winter like Hawaii?

I started with 6 seeds and was lucky to get these to sprout. Had only one come up on Richards seeds.
Overall success rate with SA for me has been on the low side. It appears everyone has the same issue.

I think these were started in early October, so they are about 5 months from seed. Germination took about 3-4 weeks.
I had to help a couple with the seed capsule.( to remove it)
