Title: Flying dragon variety: Snow Dragon
Post by: franklazar26 on April 20, 2020, 02:18:44 PM
Has anyone ever heard of this? I recently stumbled across this a little bit ago. I did not know that there was a variegated variety of the flying dragon! Definitely on my plants most wanted list.

I have a variegated flying dragon that I have had for years. It has never fruited or grown much.

That’s what it seems happens. I ask the many nurseries that propagate them and they claim no fruit yet. Perhaps I’ll just go regular FD. It does look like a beautiful tree though!

Yes. I am a fan of varigated foilage and fruit.....but.....at 10 years and no blooms or fruit all former trials and experiments point toward a lost cause.....I do not know anyone else in the citrus circle that has a pure varigated poncirus that blooms and fruits.

The leaves of a highly variegated tree produces much less food for the tree, than the leaves of a standard tree.  The green portion of the leaf is the only portion that can photosynthesize,  thus the only portion of the leaf that can provide nourishment for the tree,  Therefore, a variegated tree grows slower, and take longer to fruit, directly in proportion to the amount of variegation.

This is mine after 15+ years in the ground. Long before someone made up the name "snow dragon"...

This was my old standard trifoliata. Bonnie Childers sent me the budwood. I tried to move it & it died...

Is that albino citrus grafted or seedling?

Such a beautiful tree Laaz, it’s a shame it’s useless fruiting wise! Thanks for the info, I’ll save my money lol

It's grafted, but not albino.

Its amazingly small for a 15 year old tree.  I suppose lack of chlorophyll limits its ability to fruit or grow.

I have a snow lemon that has fruits. But only portions of the branches are all white/yellow.

Also now have a albino grafted branch that has been growing for about 1 year, looks like I will get flowers soon.

Just a follow up on my albino lemon graft that I showed photos above.

It is 2023 and still going strong. Well not really growing strong, it has barely grown any new branches,  still about the same size graft. Every year it seems to drop all of its leaves, then the new leaves grow out. I did let one small fruit grow on this albino branch. I had the minature version of the normal fruit on the graft. It was a lemon fruit, just very small. I should have not let it hold fruit, it really slow down the growth of this branch. This graft has been growing now for 3 years.

Here''s the same grafted branch photos today, 6/17/23:

Didn't grow much in 2 years. I should have removed the fruits sooner instead of letting it ripen.
