Nice tree! Slow growers in my experience

So true! I think I get 2 or 3 growth flushes per year.  Last year my in-ground seedling started 3 flower panicles. They reached 1 inch in length...and then stopped. I guess they got tired. Hoping for better luck this year.

I had a seedling where the fruit skin color went from dark green to light green when it was ripe. The color change was distinct. There may have been a touch of yellow but never white. That's seedling variation for you. I would suggest trying them at different color stages to see when you like them best.

Lots of excellent suggestions on this thread. I would throw in any of the Physalis ssp. fruits (poha berry, ground cherry, winter cherry, etc.).

Have you considered contacting public gardens, such as the Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead, or Grimal Grove in Big Pine Key?

I just sprouted some from seeds, so I do not have any personal insight yet on growing henna, however I did do a little research and found the site below. It has links at the bottom of the page to additional information about henna. As to soil, I only found mention of potting soil if growing indoors. Most importantly seems to be to let it dry out before watering to mimic the monsoon climate it is used to. Good luck!

I have used black sapote in place of pumpkin in a cheesecake. It had a beautiful  chocolate  colored appearance and tasted like cheesecake.

I agree. It is absolutely frustrating and infuriating at the same time. Thanks for showing me your idea. It's perfect. Now I know what people meant by crates!
[/quote]

Happy to share. They key things I would point out is to make sure the sides give plenty of clearance so that the seedlings have room to grow before removing the crate,; if you use trays -make the crate as near as possible to the size of your trays (and  flush to the surface) so that critters cannot bypass the crating; and make sure the holes in the screen are small enough to keep the critters out. Nice can get into pretty tight holes. Larger critters may be able to overturn the crates so you may have to weigh them down.

There are few things as frustrating as going out to check on you planted seeds and finding them chews or removed. I built some frames with spare material to protect them. The other night I planted a tray and failed to protect them and every single one was gone in the morning. One night was all it took and the local mice had a feast. These are the frames I built.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Maprang VS Mango
« on: October 16, 2022, 01:01:46 PM »
The maprangs I have grown have only had 2-3 growth flushed per year.
I planted a grafted maprang in full sun, it flowered twice without setting any fruit, and died. It never grew much beyond it's original height. I now have a seedling in-ground, and in conditions similar aß to those described by roblack - full sun for a couple of hours during the mid-day. Currently it stands about 7 ft tall. In January 2021, it started to out 3 panicles, but ran out of gas when they reached about 1 inch. Hopefully I will have better news in late January 2023.

New central leader(s) will grow back. Might take a while as mangosteen are generally slow growers outside of their native range. Attached is a photo of my Achaicharu which was cut back and has now come back with multiple leaders.

Maprang has opposite leaves. Mango has alternate leaves. These leaves are opposite. 🙂

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passion fruit peculiarity
« on: July 17, 2022, 08:50:52 PM »
I noticed an unusual shape on some passion fruits that were forming a few weeks ago. Vine is a seedling but whether it is the original vine from last year (where the fruit were simply round) or a seedling from last year's crop is unknown. Additionally, both yellow and purple fruits were grown together (separate vines of course) last year. I will also nite that these naturally I curred as shown and are not the result of any plastic shaping molds.   First pic is from July 4. Second and third pics are from today.
Has anyone seen this before? Virus maybe?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Allspice (Pimenta dioica)
« on: July 09, 2022, 10:42:05 PM »
Are these dioecious?
Do you have more than 1 tree?
My tree flowers but doesn’t set fruit
Do you have any recommendation for uses?
Sorry about hijacking your thread  :P

The literature indicates that they are often dioceous, however I have only one tree that produces very well.

The mature green berries are dried and used as a commercial spice. The leaves can be used as a rub for various meats and as a flavoring (simar to bay leaf) in soups. The wood is used in bbq'ing to impart jerk flavoring to meats.

My allspice tree has fruited later than normal this year. Typically the fruit are ripe sometime in May. Oddly, it is also flowering again. Has anyone else had a similar experience this year?

Mango leaves are alternate, maprang leaves are opposite.

I tried a fruit called “Hagis” Syzygium tripinnatum But it’s also listed as Eugenia victoriana?

The plant was erroneously labeled as Eugenia victoriana when it arrived at the Park. There is apparently some question as to the "tripannatum" species identification.

I was looking for the cinnamon apple tree at fruit and spice and couldn’t find it. This is the fruit I wanted to try the most! Can anybody tell me where the tree is located approximately?

It is close to the olosapo tree.
