My first South Florida Breadfruit
« on: August 09, 2014, 05:41:49 PM »
My Ma-afala tree has held 5 fruits over the summer.  I harvested the first one today and cooked it up on the grill ...

I think I overcooked it.  I left it on the grill for about an hour at around 425f.  The flavor was decent, but I think I need to up my cooking skills in order for it to truly shine.  Anyway, I am happy that the tree actually held fruit to maturity here in S.Fla.  I certainly won't Axe the tree anytime soon, but I also don't think I'll make a grand effort to cold protect it this winter.

I hope I can get a chempedak or marang to fruit one of these days ....

Without a doubt.  I am still amazed with the tree.

It is such an awesome looking tree, you hate to come to the realization that the fruit is pretty much like a potato in overall eating quality.  I have had several preparations of breadfruit and haven't found one I don't like....but then again, I love potatoes also.  Great work in getting it to bear here in South Florida.  I think you should try one of the fried preparations the next time.  Tostones maybe?

Well done Sleepdoc!  My wife is from Sierra Leone where this fruit is called "belly full". A single fruit from a mature tree is said to feed an entire family...

Sleep, Great achievement! You might want to make puchero and tostones with your next fruits.

Boiling, with coconut milk or being left to ripen are other options.Looks like mangosteen and durian are genuine options if breadfruit can be grown.

A good recipe is using the bread fruit as a supplement for potato in a potato salad. Taste really good. Also what my grandpa does is he mashes the breadfruit (boiled) and adds corned beef (canned) and makes pattys  and fries them, very delicious.

Yes, both would be great options if we can find ones that grow as fast as breadfruit.  Have any you can send us?

I remember eating " Panapen / Bread Fruit " In PR , boiled and served with a lil olive oil cod-fish onions avocado and white rice.
Was quite good , In PR the boil the bread-fruit alone with green bananas , yucca , Malaga and other root veggies .

Great job ! ...

I was remembering the epic story of the cold fronts. I would have to try frying, it makes a lot of things taste better, turkey to 'taters.

Thanks everyone for all the remarks!  I definitely need to hone my cooking skills before I can whip up a truly tasty dish.  Next up I think I'll try some basic slicing and frying method.

I gave a fruit to murahilin today.  He is going to have some relatives cook it up in style.  It will be interesting to see how an experienced breadfruit eater evaluates this Florida grown Samoan variety ..
