Tropical Fruit Discussion / Californian Rollinia
« on: January 11, 2014, 06:52:08 PM »
Hi Everyone,

I recently went to my friend Norman's house and found that many a flower on his Rollinia tree had turned to fruit! There were about 30-50 total fruits on the tree and only one was larger than a baseball. Pics below, I hope this fruit matures correctly so I can taste it!

Some small fruits

The largest fruit there, about the size of a small pommelo.

And of course the tree itself.

Thanks for looking,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Alibaba.com: Trustworthy or not?
« on: January 02, 2014, 08:19:59 PM »
Hi Friends,

I have been dying to taste the Salak fruit(Salacca edulis) for a long time now and searched for fresh fruit for sale. I came across Alibaba.com but it seemed a little weird so I came here to ask for members experiences with this site. I am eager to order and have everything in place, I do not have an import permit but luckily my family is friends with the produce manager at Whole Foods and he does have access to a permit so I will just use that permit and have it ordered to my house. Seems relatively cheap but I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't a bad website.

Thanks in advance to everyone who posts,

Hi Friends,

After hearing so much about the rumored lemon mérengue pie flavor of Bíriba I have decided that I have to put the rumors to an end. Is there anyone on this forum or anyone you know of who can ship some Fresh (preferably non Irradiated) Rollinia?

All help greatly appreciated,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona acuminata: Albino Annona?
« on: December 27, 2013, 08:10:02 PM »
Hi Friends,

We've all seen Annona's white on the inside but on the outside it' pretty unheard of. This strange brazilian Annona seems to split open on the tree when ripe! White on the outside and orange on the inside, pretty cool! Any members tasted this or are currently growing it?

Definitally some weird Annona's out there...

Hi Friends,

I recently found a source I might be able to get some A. globiflora scion from but wanted to know what it could be grafted on to. I think we should also make a chart on this forum for long term graft compatibilities for rare annona's so once we source them we can be able to know what they can graft on.

Have any ideas what A. globiflora can be grafted on?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mangifera caesia: Wani
« on: December 26, 2013, 10:13:28 PM »
Hi Friends,

After drooling over the "Fruit Hunters" video parts 1 and 2 for the billionth time a question came to my head, did the Wani graft's take at the Fairchild Botanical gardens or did they not? Also, since it was not included in the video, does anyone know what species it was grafted onto? I was thinking M. odorata or some other Mangifera other than M. indica but since I am very primitive on topics including Mangifera could some of our experts or native floridians who visited the Fairchild Botanical Gardens recently please give an explanation?

All replies are helpful, please post pictures if possible...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Any african members have this myrtaceae rarity?
« on: December 25, 2013, 12:52:11 PM »
Hi friends,

When I was looking at the list of African Eugenia's I came across this fine sp. Eugenia umtamvunensis. It is native to Africa and according to the IUCN redlist it is "Vulnerable". Fruits look small but looks like a good one for collectors in sub-tropical climates. Any-one have it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone tasted this or are growing this?
« on: December 24, 2013, 08:44:26 PM »
Hello Friends, I went surfing the internet for Artocarpus and found this interesting sp. On top tropicals it was said to be called "Green Tampang". Ot's scientific name is Artocarpus dadah. Looks like a smaller and rounder version of Lacucha with good tasting flesh. So has anyone tasted this or is currently growing it? IF anyone has seeds in the future let me know.

Anyone tasted it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Unknown Pouteria
« on: December 23, 2013, 02:49:48 PM »
Hi Friends, recently went to a local nursery and I spied a pouteria inside a hassle of pomegranites. I thought mamey sapote at first but the leaves are too thick and waxy unlike the floppy green leaves of my other mamey sapote. It was unlabeled but I think it might be green sapote. It looks a lot like another unknown pouteria I have that Oscar says looks a lot like Pouteria hypoglauca.

Any ideas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How long until Garcinia humilis will fruit?
« on: December 21, 2013, 01:38:56 AM »
Hi all, I have recently received a Garcinia humilis seedling from kind Richard whom supplied a few seedlings for free. On wikipedia it says the fruit is a prolific bearer meaning it fruits in a less amount of time? Does anyone have experience with it or know how long it takes to fruit? I have the same question about Garcinia macrophylla and Garcinia brasiliensis.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Artocarpus anisophyllus: Anything about it?
« on: December 20, 2013, 09:17:38 PM »
Hi everyone, this fruit absolutely fascinated me, it is like a marang with borneo red jackfruit on the inside. I found seeds for sale on eBay but could not be shipped to USA. I was wondering who has tasted it and how pretty the tree is. I thought it has got to be pretty cool because one of it's synonyms is Artocarpus superbus, sounds pretty superb aye?

He's turning 80 on january 30th and wants to sell out all of his tree's so he can retire and just do private orders from then on. Tropical Fruit Discussion / Winter Crop
« on: December 18, 2013, 08:31:11 PM »
I had a bunch of flowers all over miscalleneous fruit trees so I decided to hand pollinate them and hope they would be ripe before it got really cold. There are Kaffir Lime leaves, Seedless Strawberry Guava, Yuzu fruits(or as I like to call it Wrinkly Orange), Buddhas Hand, and Lind Tangerines.

P.S made a tea from the Kaffir Lime leaves for my mom, she has the flu and she said it stopped the queasyness.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Using coconut pots for seed starting?
« on: December 18, 2013, 01:03:17 AM »

The pots seem to dry out the soil about a day after watering but other than that I have heard that they are good. Any other good or bad parts to them? I am currently germinating everything I have inside them, Lakoocha seem to flourish in these pots opposed to plastic pots, no other plants seem to have any other difference though.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone heard of this rare sp.
« on: December 16, 2013, 09:45:27 PM »
Hi all, found this odd Annona specimen while surfing the net, it is supposed to be Annona edulis, it looks like a mini cherimoya in one picture, strange... anyone have info about this species? No flowers, foliage looks very pretty, is it worth growing(that is if anyone can find seeds)?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Junglesop root tip cut off: will it live?
« on: December 15, 2013, 03:04:20 PM »
Hi everyone, my junglesop seed from trade-winds was outgrowing it's 1 gallon pot so I transplanted it to a pecan pot. I accidentally damaged the very tip of the root on the two main roots. I am worried about it so I took pictures and wanted to ask the pro's.

Hi everyone, I went over to my friend Norman's house today and collected some Ice Cream Bean from a cultivar that bears fruit early. I have about 22 seeds if anyone is interested, PM me your address and I'll put em' in the mail.

Hi Friends, today when I went out to look at my persimmon tree I noticed that there were very few fruit's on it, I was bummed, they are one of my favorite fruits when in season. The fruits were relatively small but still tasted good, anyone else have this problem?

Here is my straggly tree  :-*

And the fruits of course

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help indentifying this (possible) fruit tree
« on: December 07, 2013, 08:58:01 PM »
Hi everyone, I went to a local nursery, Island Seed and Feed, and came across this strange specimen, the leaves look like those of immature jackfruit or miniature pedalai leaves. Tree is relatively slow growing, it is only in a 5 gallon pot.

Here is the top of the tree(it looks just the same except leafless going down the trunk)

Here is a close up of the leaf

Any ideas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Does this usually happen with Jaboticaba?
« on: December 06, 2013, 07:06:25 PM »
Hi Friends, I was very surprised to find that a branch of jaboticaba I had chopped off and left on the ground re-rooted itself without aid in about three weeks, it is now considered a plant, instead of budwood. For all those Jaboticaba experts(Adam, Oscar, and all Jaboticabaholic's Anonymous), can you give me an explanation for this? I will post pictures later  ;).

Hi friends, I have currently ordered some H. purpurea seeds that have just arrived and although most have already germinated about 30% haven't. They are very small seeds, and my biggest worry is that they won't be very resilient if dried out at all or if not planted upon arrival. Should I put them in a bag with sphagnum moss or in a pot? Sorry if this is a stupid question, I have those a lot.
