I'm going this next Thursday to the Instituto Tecnológico de Cd. Altamirano, Guerrero., where agronomy engineers in this university who has been doing selections and crosses of the best types of Annona Diversifolia trying to find the way of commercialization, they have the advantage of being in the middle of tierra caliente, Guerrero,is the place with most ilama diversity on earth, they grow wild all over the region, and there's all kinds, they have been looking /breeding for size, brix, more flesh, less seeds (this is the main problem in regular types were there is more seeds than flesh) also thin skin, and less prone to crack, I don't know how many types I'll find, there's documented around 150 differents I'll probably look for the top 10/15 of them, they told me season finish Oct 5, I'm leaving next Thursday to arrive there on Friday, I'm going in Airplane /bus(there's no way I'm driving my car over there with foreign plates, I want to be camuflaje as a local Ranchero, this is the most dangerous area of Mexico, and there has been over 300 homicides in this year, this is the place where they kidnapped you and never give you back even if your family pay the rescue, my plan is to get there early in the morning and leave Cd Altamirano the same day, so I'm flying to Mexico city Thursday night and then taking a bus at 11.59 to Cd Altamirano to arrive there at 6.30,
This will be the only time I'll do the trip, so anybody interested I'll post availability and prices here the weekend if everything results well...

Hi everyone! Glad to be back of this great adventure, I traveled with my friend Lalo Zedillo who is another fruit hunter at 71 and years old, we took the plane from Puerto Vallarta at 7 pm last Thursday to arrive México city at 8:30 then we moved to bus station to take the midnight one to Cd. Altamirano, we arrived at 7 in the morning and head up to the Market, for our great complacency as soon as we arrived saw the streets full of ilama vendors, they have them on a carpet on the floor or in baskets or buckets, different shapes from smooth skin all the way to the rarest things with spikes longer than Bíriba or Squamosa, colors white, pink, red, white & pink, some purple, average size 500 grams with some big ones of about 1 kilo, my friend has never tried them so we purchased one and he said was worth the trip, mentioned that taste between ice cream and cotton candy, there was also another race fruits I have never seen in the market, and a large selection of different types of beans, after this we took a taxi to the university Tecnológico Cd Altamirano, the taxi driver told us about the cartel people who they control everything in the city, they have the gun guys camping in the hills and "halcones" (hawks) in the city, young teenagers who are on the pay rol for low money who do nothing other than sit in the corners watching for the army passing by or a victim to kidnapped all they do is a call and these gunners come down to pick somebody who in some cases never comes back even if the family pays the rescue money, every single bussiness has to pay them "derecho de piso" other wise they take them to the hills.. Even taxi drivers has to come up with the fee, the taxi driver said people or bussiness man are leaving and no investers had come for obvious reasons, after 15 minutes we arrived to university where for our surprise there were no classes because of the earthquake two days before, the only one was the security guard, he said because the buildings construction have to be inspected against damage before students go back, after talking to him for 45 minutes about trivial topics, he offered to call someone who can help us, after two hours and talking with another two people who ask for ten minutes every time we finally met the right person Agronomy Dr. Gustavo Valladares from Colombia living in that area for the last 20 years, and the co-writter of the e-book "ilamas de tierra caliente" very knowledgeable person and expert in ilamas he took us back to the Market were we had "menudo" (beef stomach soup) for breakfast, after that we sample the most appealing fruit types were I selected 4 types with outstanding flavor and very meaty, after that he took us to the Orchard were they have 160 varieties with three trees of each making almost 500 trees, we arrived at the end of the season because of that we could only tried around 40 types, after collecting the fruit because it was late and we missed the bus we have to Stay overnight in a modest hotel where I in my paranoia take off one by one the glass pieces of my room just in case I have to look for an emergency exit, fortunately I didn't have to scape and taxi pick us at 5,25 am to take us to the bus, in general a very nice experience counting with favor of the circunstances, would I go back?
Don't know.....
Glad to hear you and your family are safe!!

Nice Raul! Very nice shots! That is a unforgettable experience! I've seen that you met some very awesome/big Ilama fruits.
I'm impressed by the fact that Ilama is everywhere and that Dr. Gustavo Valladares has 160 varieties which is a whole lot of treasures for those who loves Ilama. After your story, I have no idea if you should visit back there (as you already selected the most valuable varieties) but I believe there will be some fruit lovers/adventurers starting to put on plans for a visit to Cd. Altamirano and Dr. Gustavo Valladares. There maybe some other types of never-seen-before fruits which haven't been in their seasons yet.
Anyway, it's great that you returned safe and are able to share with us here.
-
Man that looks totally worth the danger, Great pictures, Glad you had a safe trip

This an awesome report on this experience and I enjoyed the photographs of the market and orchard. I am surprised the ladies allowed you to take photos of them given that the cartel keeps a close eye them. The round Ilama in the photo with a pen seemed interesting, was that good?

PM sent Raul. Thank you, Chris

Could you tell us the climate of the area where these seeds are from? Any idea what is the minimum temperature the plants will take? Will they take high humidity?

Where they grow wild is at 350 meters asl, latitude 17/18 in summer is very humed and temperatures reach 40 Celsius, not sure about cold resistance do, but ilama has been grown with success in several parts of Florida..

For the ones who ordered today I will ship til next Monday, there has been overwhelming requests sorry..

Are you suicidal or running away from your wife....LOL...For no amount of money I would go over-there and traveling in a bus at night !!! You have no fear man . Good luck , I'll keep the GA3 ready ....
It took two years to sprout the seeds of annona diversifolia cv. white without Gibberellic acid. Really tough seeds, two years underground without demage.!

I knew the question about germination would come up sooner or later , so, just for fun , I soaked some of my own ( white pulp ) in about 300 pm Ga3 for 24 hours . Planted them on 9/17/17 germinated yesterday 9/29/17 ......That's 12 days guys ....no BS....

Please keep reporting your early growth as I was mentioned by a member few days ago that he germinated them with Gibberellic and the seedlings were very weak...

I mean soaking the seeds will not have any adverse effects on the future seedlings right?
I know that gibberellins can have an "elongating" "gianting" effect on plants.
Lok these 2 cabbage plants treated with gibberellic acid compared to the dwarf control on the left

That's so cool Lory, I wonder if I can use it on my seedling Durian to speed up growth, would be applied foliar or in the ground?
-
No Raul don't do it with your seedlings!
Your trees will be longer but "etiolated"
Same efects like a tree growing in a dark place with not enough light.
That's exactly what i'm afraid of!
-
Hello,
I'm interested in your seeds. Sending over a PM. Thanks!
-
Hi Raul
Cost of 15 hybrid gauva seeds sent by paypal. Please send along with Ilama seeds.
Best regards

2yrs for the seed to sprout? What if you nip it a bit so that it can absorb water , would that speed up the process?

Try using some sand paper on the coat and ga3 with around 50ppm to 200ppm.
-
I sprouted 3 different types of Ilama with 350 ppm ga3 soak for 24 hours. Most or all popped up in two weeks or so. I wouldn't try sprouting these without it.
-
Thanks for the advice Josh!
Your seedlings were healthy and not etiolated?
-
Maybe slightly but nothing extreme.

OK good to know i'll do the same with Raul's seeds
-
This is a dumb question, but how do you measure or estimate something to be 350 ppm? I just bought some acid with a tiny spoon. My dad is gonna germinate these seeds.
Thanks.

I weighed mine. You have to dissolve it into alcohol before diluting. I bought mine from ebay.

Try using some sand paper on the coat and ga3 with around 50ppm to 200ppm.
I would not try these without the GA. I got a couple of lots 2-3 years back from Luc & Raul. At the time, there was talk about scarifying & I think Adam had suggested trying to remove the seed coat. I managed to remove 1/2 the seed coat from the seeds without any apparent damage to the seed. I think even with this course of action, only one germinated (& I lost it anyway). So, it is not a simple matter of water getting to the seed. Try the GA.

Try the GA.

John , you are absolutely right , I got seeds of several varieties from all over the Ilama growing areas in Mexico . Unless you have all the time in your life , GA is the only way to go , I had 100% germination on all in 2 weeks . Some were about 3 weeks in the mail ..didn't make a difference . Actually I am gonna do a lot of test with GA on other seeds that take more than one month to sprout .

I just received my seeds. Thank you for your sacrifice Raul! Take care, Chris

Luc,
Did you scarify the seedcoat in any way or just GA treat? Do you recall what concentration of GA you used & for how long? It would be good to compare your methods with others reported here.
Thanks,
John

So, should we call these Guerero red and white or is there a local name for these varieties?

I don't know if anybody has tried this method for germinating dormant or frustrating seeds, especially Annona. However if they are similar to Mitrephora and other Annonaceae species then give this a go.
Clean & sterile the seed, wrap in moist chux cloth, place in sealed air tight clear bag and throw that on a heat mat. Some things just need heat from below. I was able to reduce the germination and break dormancy. I.e. some Annonaceae will take up to a year or more to germinate, the above method......4 - 5 weeks.

John , I used a 300 to 350 ppm for 24 hours , one scoup ( included in the package ) of the same stuff that Vermented ordered . The first badge of seeds ( white ) were my own fresh from the tree , 100 % germination . All the others , and on these I did not measure precisely the amount of water and some stayed more than 24 hours in the solution , I had about 80 % germination , some may still come up....these took a little longer to sprout .
At the same time I did some Eugenia stipitata , that normally take 3 to 4 months , so far nothing ....

Rambo-Raul, Be super careful out there. I'm interested in seeds, but more importantly your safety!

Your seedlings have pale green "smooth" opaque leaves.
Mine have glossy leathery leaves similar to the one of annona muricata.
Something is wrong, what are the "right" leaves of annona diversifolia?

Hi Lory. I think Raul had about 13 or 14 different types of Ilama in the seed batches and they types got mixed up quite a bit. I think they ended up being separated by flesh color. It may be genetic diversity.

Ah Ok, thanks for your reply, then i can have peace of mind.
I would'nt like to grow a SOURSOP thinking it's an ilama and then finding out after several years that i was wrong :-\
-
I have never seen ilama with glossy leathery leaves. Lory, maybe post a picture dor assistance
-
Here's a ( blurred sorry ) pic of 4 of Raul's ilama he brought back last year ....none has glossy leaves btw.

are all llama leaves rounded?
If the tip are pointed, then it must be atemoya or cherimoya, corrected?
-
Oh my God I'm starting to think that my cuddled ilama seedlings are actually just common SOURSOP :-(
I'm wondering how it could happen.....
I've no pictures now since i'm in currently in Italy but leaves are dfinitely leathery and glossy like a soursop.
So bad :-(

Dont worry, you could sell them or perhaps use them to hybridize!
what if the soursop and ilama got hybridized, there would be a hybrid!
cheer up, a common soursop is not that bad? ;D
