Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Dragon Fruit Set
« on: October 12, 2017, 11:11:49 PM »
I have a Purple haze dragon fruit vine that been flowering constantly over the summer to fall. None of the fruit set. Does it need a cross-pollinator or any tips for helping the fruit set? It currently being watered by a drip irrigation system also if that a problem.

Purple haze was developed by Paul Thomson.  Paul named his seedlings S1-S9.  Purple haze is aka S5.  This variety is not self-fertile and required cross pollination.  I’be told use a non-S variety will yield better results.  The reason is many of the S series shared the genetic of the parents.
Df doesn’t need much water.  Be cautious of overwatering.  Too much water will also cause fruit and flower bud drops.

S1=Physical Graffiti
S2=cosmic Charlie
S3=Delight
S5=purple haze
S9= dark star
S8=sugar dragon

What variety would you recommend. I thought i made sure to see if it was self pollinating  :-\. I have a Rixford and halley comet at another place. I thnk i have a natural mystic somewhere too.

I had 2 caimitos trees, one died in 2014 and one just died in December. Not a bright idea trying to grow it in the San Gabriel Valley. One frost day pretty much ended it life for me. I'll probably get another one and grow it at my Grandmas in Orange County where it protected by brick walls.

Wow, interesting. Did they have any good mango trees?

Tree looking good. Did you tip prune them?

I'm assuming those lightbulbs are for our coming winter? You think they'll need it? I have 6 young trees in pots, pondering on how to protect them.

Wow, i'm really worried now. I just bought a 3 gallon Cac Hoa Loc mangos from Top Tropical at 90 bucks with 30 dollar shipping each. I'm vietnamese and my uncles live in vietnam. They'll know if it a true Cac Hoa Loc or not. Hopefully I don't get screwed 2ish years down the line. Hopefully it a true Cac Hoa Loc so i can spread the budwood around. What are some awesome fruit tree vendors? I had great experience with Wild papaya nursery.

This is just retarded.... Please do not listen to half of this mess....

When you sell thousands of trees a  year... There will be mislabels and wrong trees issued... I bet my bottom dollar this has happned with POG and Pine Island.

You're probably right. Just so paranoid.  :-\

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango Tree Recommendations

Check out Dr Campbell's YouTube videos, I learn a lot watching his videos when I first started grafting. Search on youtube for mango grafting, veener grafting, cleft grafting etc...

Thanks for the advice, watching all the videos!

Anyone happen to have a good site that list mangos + harvest season for California. I want to stagger the growing seasons.

I ended up buying Cat Hoa Loc mango, Coconut Cream, Maha Chanok, and Lemon Zest. Still looking for 3 more.

tqn626,
You can send a PM to Jimmy "champa nursery" to see if and when LZ and CC may be available.
There is one mango shipment coming in October.
But, you may have to wait until the springtime shipment.

But there is always the roll of the dice with TT.  They currently have ONE 7gal Coconut Cream, TWO 3gal LZ, and THREE 3 gal Maka Chinooks available...but the price with shipping to California will be a shocker, but you probably already know that.

Good luck!

Ya, it the usual nursery around here. Champa, Mimosa, and Ong. There also a buddhist nursery in OC, forgot the name. I bought a couple of trees from champa so far. I live in San Gabriel so im super close to both. I really don't mind the shipping, it usually around 50ish dollars, but you get quality plants. What's 50 dollars vs 1-2 growth time.

Coconut Cream for sure, if it was me. Top recommendation would be Lemon Zest, after reading these forums and seeing how fast it grows in SoCal.

Really, I hearc that it taste like orange sorbert.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Longan Planting Questions
« on: April 29, 2013, 03:02:52 AM »
My brother recently bought a 20 gallon Biew Kiew Longan Tree.

I would love some information on how to plant it, fertilize it, and water it.

I'm thinking of using Empire Builder soil for planting. I'm going to use a drip irrigation to water it. How much water does it need throughout the season?

I'm an organic gardener, will compost teas work on longan trees?

I'm also have problems with fruit settings on my mothers longan tree.

Will potassium chlorate really increase flower production?
