Are mine looking all right?  All six kauai sugarloaf plants are very red - I read this is either a nutrient deficiency, or intense sun.  I think it's the latter, as they are on my balcony patio right next to window "railing", south-east facing.  Cheese pine also looks odd.. leaves are yellow-brown, not green, and the puan is a mix of the two?  Nights have been cold here in south orange county, 1 mile from ocean.

I try to give 1/2tsp per gallon water dynagro foliage pro once a month, and sometimes if I remember, fish emulsion with a tiny amount of iron between the dynagro.  Too much?  Too little?  All are about a year old.  My grocery store ones are green, look similar size.

The red color is normal, its the sun.  I have other varieties that stay green and they all get the same treatment.  Nothing to worry about.

Im ditching the cheese pines and only growing the puan and white sugarloafs now.  The cheese has issues in our weather and the fruits tend to snap off when ripe so be sure to stake it.  The sugarloaf and pauns are winners though.

i kinda figured you would end up ditching cheese pine sooner or later i got rid of it for the same reasons just didn't grow well for me and the fruit falls off easy close to being ripe.... i do know the guy that grow's  all his pineapples indoors under grow lights his cheese pine is doing great

I'll probably give it a try again once I find some that don't cost as much

Got my hands on a Del Monte pink glow pineapple today and I have to share my opinion about it. It has to be the worst tasting pineapple I ever had it was Bland not very sweet and didn't have much of a sweet smell at all..everyone has their own tastes for things and this pineapple is not for me

I tried growing the seeds, but nothing so far. Seeds are very small in this pinapple.

pineapple seeds can take from 2 to 6 months to germinate but you can speed it up if you use a seed heating mat

Few months back I got my hands on some Antigua Black pineapple slips and so far I feel they might not do so well here in the part of florida I'm in they are already off to a bad start the rooting process has taken longer than it should and I haven't seen to much new growth but I'm not giving up I did find out that Antigua Black pineapple is part of the Queen pineapple family

I was really hoping to be able to grow white sugarloaf I have tried a few different times and they end up taking way to much cold damage here in the part of florida I'm from

The ants are most likely Argentine ants it's best to get rid of them before the plants flower otherwise it's not easy to get rid of the ants and mealybugs or scale that have gotten to the bottom of the pineapple this is why I stopped grow red Spanish pineapple cause of that reason they would end up damaging the under side of the pineapple to get the mealybugs or scale to places under the pineapple you can't get too.... Cause you can't use ant poison only way to get rid of the ants is with Neem oil/soap drench and make sure to spray all of the plants leaves too and best as possible

You can just remove the pups and plant right away.  If they are low on the plant and between leaves you can pull the leaf below the shoot way down and then carefully remove it trying not to break it or it will ruin it.  Ive ruined many being impatient removing the ones between long leaves.  The ones in the dirt just pull it strait out at the roots.

Ive started removing some types feom my collection.  The leaves are too spiney or the fruit are too small or they cant handle the weather here etc.  Pretty much all the victoria/queen ones Im ditching and probably the red spanish and chees pines too.

The current best ones are the white jade, white sugar loaf, Paun, giant md2, tropical gold, maui sweet, smooth cayanes.  The josepine is ok but the plant is pretty weak and the fruit are small and the plant seems to be a scale magnet.  Some types clearly attract more scale than others.  The sharp queen types are such a pain to work with and the fruit is very bumpy and smaller and tend to have a lot of waste from the peel.

I don't blame you for wanting to get rid of the ones with spines. The only one I plan to keep is the Natal Queen pineapple plants they do best for me and for me have an amazing taste so worth growing..... I got rid of others like red Spanish cause they attract mealybugs alot other than that they grew great I gave up the other queen pineapple varieties cause they were to small but they also grew great too just not worth the wait for a baby pineapples... Glad the others your growing are doing better for you cause they dint do well here in the part of florida I'm from

I did my first today.  Now to wait a few weeks and see what happens.

i started mine on the 15th of july this month so far they seem to be doing fine no signs of rot so
that's good so we shell see in time i will take a photo soon and post it later... i been outside potting
my next season's Natal queen suckers and slips.. not that i needed anymore. lol i already have others that will
be full grown and should flower by winter time sometime...

if you get a chance take photos of yours and keep us updated how they turn out
Success.
I have not looked for a few days and took a peek at it this evening and I see fresh growth.  I will look in better light tomorrow and take a picture or two.

Awesome Thanks for letting us know. Mine are doing great getting big Photo below

Thanks for sharing! Good to hear others trying this too.

I recently tried the quartering method to jumpstart my sugarloaf patch, and am in the middle of it. Since they were shipped with crowns cut down I tried the route of a light rooting in water first just to test viability. I am in Arizona so plants are indoors on a window sill for now.

July 14th: Placed crowns in water with little rooting hormone.
July 24th: Roots got 1/2 to 1 inch long, quartered the crowns, planted in off the shelf potting mix + perlite.  16 total.  (Hindsight should have throw in peatmoss)
August ~7th: lost one to rot. Turned black and moldy. Realized I cannot provide water on the cut side in my environment (low airflow).  I now water lightly every 3-4 days on just the not-cut side of the crown now. Also note water rooting may have compounded.
August 30th: 4 of them have visible new growth now, the other 11 still alive waiting to pop.

Comparing your timelines to mine, looks like simply cutting and planting is the way to go. I gained nothing by trying to root in water first other than assurance the crowns were still viable.

Will move to peat moss/acid based soil outdoors as they start showing growth.

Happy growing!

Also, after reviewing the image of the roots when I quartered them, I'd be tempted to even try cutting into 1/6ths or 1/8ths.

Awesome Thanks for Sharing your results of trying this method of growing

Do these suckers grow and produce faster than just planting the whole top?

I'm not 100% sure but i would think around the same time it takes a crown to grow.. and thats some what slower than when growing from slips or suckers that grow at a faster rate

13
Nice progress.  I tried this back when you originally posted.  So far I haven't seen any growth from any of the sections.  I guess you keep them in the shade for a while?  Anyway I rarely get any noticeable growth the first year when planting whole tops, maybe because of the short season here.

i kept these outside with my other pineapple plants

update here is a photo of them each starting a sucker to grow in place of the 4-way-split crown i started little over a month now

It's probably Gathering material so it can build a nest somewhere it won't harm the tree or plant

This ones a josepine from malaysia.  Its still a few months away but Ive got a few of these that are this stage.  The plant isnt that hardy and the fruit look small but the colors are nice.  Its slightly serrated and supposed to have good brix.  We'll see how it tuens out in a few months.

Have you tried Natal queen already before if you haven't you really should they are worth growing i just had 6 of them ripen

here is a photo of the crown i split into 4

This is a .pdf document showing experimental results of several split-crown techniques.
https://academicjournals.org/article/article1380096403_Agogbua%20and%20Osuji.pdf

Thanks for sharing. i seen that before in the past

21
I did not know you could do that.
Doesn't that render ineffective the drilling of the center of the crown that some sellers do to prevent growing the variety?

Thanks for sharing I must try this sometime.

Hi you can drill the center out of the crown like some commercial Growers do but the crown would still root and grow but it will produce a sucker to grow in its place and you can grow from that. It might not work with all variety of pineapples... .most of the time when a growers/seller drills out the center by the time it's bought alot of times the crown is in bad shape and would end up rotting if trying to root... The method I'm doing needs to be done with a fresh crown which the crown hasn't been drilled out

22
i always use the crown from my Natal Queen Pineapples along with the slips and suckers... I'm always doing research on pineapple plants so i heard about what's called the 4 way split crown method if done right it will give you 4 plants instead of one works great i have done it a few times now..

if you wanna learn how you can watch this guys Youtube how to video check it out

I can send a cheespine slip next time if you want one.  They seem ok in the hoophouse here over winter but you can tell the plant isn't that hardy.  The queen types are for sure tough.  I got one from malaysia called Sawit that looks like a queen type if you want to try and grow it.

I'll probably pass on the cheese pine but thanks for offering... If the ones you are talking about from Malaysia came from a guy on ebay named Peter I already bought most of what he had to offer I believe back in 2018 or 19 can't remember. most of them did well but Josephine didn't do so well during winter time I ended up selling it to a guy who grows all his pineapple plants inside under grow lights its doing awesome for him so that's good.

I like my Natal Queen the best its awesome tasting and very hardy.... I might want some more Queen Victoria pups again in time.
