I don’t have yuzu, mine froze to death the first winter, but my nansho dai dai had long thorns like that. It was from seed, not grafted.

TFN, what is the white covering over your frames in the photo above? Is the frame a metal pipe car port assembly? It looks like one my father has. Cost effective and easy to acquire and assemble frames is something I’m interested in.

Thanks for the temperature listing! It helps paint the picture of how hardy the tree is. Maybe breaking above freezing each day helped give Super Changsha some relief. Like being able to get it’s head above the surface of water to take a breath during a week-long swim in a frozen lake.

I didn’t get above freezing here that week. I lost everything that wasn’t covered and heated except one dunstan.

How many hours below freezing did it endure during that event and still be able to survive and set fruit this year?

Florian, I’m sorry to annoy you with my ignorance. Thanks for correcting my misspelling of the word “Poncirus “.  So, Florian, what is the common name of the hybrid produced from ichangensis and citrus aurantium?

I’m trying to copy you a link: http://www.plantwise.org/KnowledgeBank/FactsheetForFarmers.aspx?pan=20147801443
It’s gummosis. From insect, mechanical damage, or disease. Most of what I see on internet about citrus gummosis is concerning phytophthora.

I looked up “Kabosu “ or citrus sphaerocarpa on Citrus pages site. It’s Ichang/sour orange hybrid growing in China and popular in Japan.

Poncirus trifoliata x mandarin = citrandarin
Ichangensis x mandarin = ichandarin
Poncirus trifoliata x citrus aurantium = citradia
Poncirus trifoliata x pomelo = citrumelo
So, ichangensis x citrus aurantium = ? ( “Iradia”, ichantium”, “ichadia”?)

But Walt, it sounds like everyone can concur that the “poncyrus is bitter gene “ is present in all human, and probably all vertebrates’ DNA. I’ve heard even pigs won’t eat trifoliate fruits. I wonder if goats will; goats eat anything.

I like the smell of the whole uncut fruit. I almost detect perfume-like quality fragrance. But it is very strong. For me the taste was also very strong and acidic, almost to the point of worrying if I chugged even half of the juice glass it may cause harm to my system. I “feel” instinctively that it would have to be diluted by 50 to 75 % with water, after settling out the resin, to be safe to drink. The smell also made me think of moth balls, which is powerful but I don’t find unpleasant.

Thanks guys. So, when describing the hybrid the mother plant is listed first? Ex: poncirus trifoliata ( mother) x citrus reticulata (father)?

I tried letting the juice settle in a glass in refrigerator over 24 hours and tasted the “good juice “ at the top of the glass, and it was too strong and bitter to drink; if I wanted to dilute it in water and a lot of sugar, maybe, but... really, why?

Cold Hardy Citrus / Parentage of a hybrid?
« on: October 31, 2018, 08:29:54 PM »
I should know the answer by now, but I know several of you can elaborate ad nauseum and enlighten me: When trying to create a citrus hybrid, does it matter which of the parent trees serves as the mother or father plant? For example, I’ve learned Ichang papeda doesn’t come true from seed, so if I want a hybrid of ichangensis with Seville sour orange, I would want the ichangensis to be the mother plant, no?  If the sour orange was the mother pollinated by ichangensis, there would be less chance of getting a hybrid offspring since the orange is polyembryonic, right? So when the citranges were created via hybridization, which was the mother plant, the trifoliata or the orange? Did it matter since oranges and trifoliata both tend to come true from seed with low chance of producing a hybrid? Could I pollinate both parents with each other’s pollen and then watch the seedlings of both sets of fruit to look for hybrids?

I read about the marmalade and tea last night. But that juice was so strong and bitter after settling the resin out, I’d hate to go to the trouble of making marmalade and it be inedible. Maybe someone can bring some marmalade to the expo in November for folks to try.

I’ve not sent him a personal email. Guess I should. Thanks. I really think it’s Swingle though. After research, I think the only way it could be poncirus x aurantium is if the aurantium half was bergamot since they can be yellow and pear shaped. I wonder if anyone else has got any fruit off of a Woodlanders “citradia “.

Lovely. Morton and citrumelos are rather large fruits compared to other citranges. May this combination of the two produce larger fruit in the future?

Poncirus  juice extracted yesterday and darker juice settled to bottom overnight in refrigerator. Top layer tastes very bitter but may be able to drink small amount with added sugar.

Thanks Ilya11!  I noticed this morning that half of the juice in the glass is dark on bottom and lighter on top half of glass. So half of the juice we extract from poncirus is “turpentine “.  Is it really turpentine? Like what they get from pine trees? Is it flammable? For a while I was wondering if I needed to use paint thinner to clean the sticky thick resin off of my orange reamer and knife I used to extract the poncirus juice. It finally came off with soapy water and wiping hard/ pulling the gunk off with a wet paper towel. I saw reference to the poncirus resin being “poisonous “. Is it poison?
