Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: timing of fertlizer
« on: February 19, 2024, 11:23:27 AM »
Jacks is a excellent fertilize, particularly for container trees.  It is also an excellent fertilizer for in ground trees. In my mind, and the minds of many growers  Jacks 25-5-15 is the very best fertilizer for citrus.  This is because 25-5-15 is the ratio that citrus absorb nutrients. However, in Florida, and other large citrus growing states, the University only suggest fertilizers that are sold in bulk due to the large volume of fertilizers it takes to fertilize a commercial grove.  I use 25-5-i5 on all of my trees , inground and container.   Kulasa, thank you for your post to me, I should have advised Unicyclemike differently.

How often you fertilize outdoor citrus trees depends on the trees age. For a 1 year old  tree, the University of Florida suggest to apply a 6-6-6 fertilizer with 6 applications per year. 2 year old tree 5 times per year. For older trees 3 times per  year.

I'm still very dubious about growing a tree from a leaf.

Well maybe there is an outside possibility, but I'm still not convinced..

5-1-1 normally last 2 plus years.  In your area if you put the tree outside, it surly will become infected by HLB which is an incurable diseases

Kulasa, then is it not coming from the leaf, but rather from what you are calling the nob.

Sounds like a wonderful citrus variety.  I have never heard of it before your post.  Welcome to this forum.

I and many others use the 5-1-1 medium for citrus.  5-1-1 is 5 parts pine bark fines (pieces at 1\4") plus 1 part peat moss, and 1 part perlite.  If you do not want to cut your pieces into the proper size, you can go to any larger pet supply store and purchase a bag of Repti Bark.  Also add dolomite as the calcium source.   Soak the wood chips over night before blending the potting mixture. This formula gives equal parts of solid particles, air, and water when the medium is completely saturated.  This mixture also eliminates the perched water table in the container..

I  also agree with Galatians  concerning the fungus.  The control for the disease is easily found on the internet. Longer periods of dry weather also greatly helps the problem.

I once grew the Bizzarria , but eventually replaced it with a grapefruit.  As Bizzarria is not eatable.  I originally got the tree from Lazz.

Your grapefruit tree may have a little fungus, but I believe the main problem with the tree is that it is greatly under fertilized.  A tree that size should be fertilized 3 times a year.  Many growers in your area use either a 6-6-6 or a 8-8-8 formula fertilizer, or some formulation close to those ratios.

Your growing conditions are not hot enough.  When I grew Chandler I kept my night time temperatures at 50F night, and 80/90F daytime.  Thee fruit was pink in color.

Couple comments.  1. Why does anyone bother with citrus like Citrondarin.   2. I grow both meiwa and nagami and I find meiwa MUCH sweeter than nagami.  However, each to their own.

Yes, it is surely white fly.   You can spray with horticultural oil which will kill all the insects eggs. Then keep a careful watch and  reapply if and when necessary.

Lauta is correct. The seed are long past dead.   The buyer of the lemon must have a lot of extra cash.

Xie Shan is excellent.   Valentine Pumelo is very sweet with no acid.

It is the wind against a tree shaking the tree back and forth that generates resistance that provides stem strength to the tree.

None of the above citrus varieties are resistant to HLB.  In Florida, they will be doomed.  Citrus seedlings when they germinate and grow they will also be killed by HLB.

If left on the tree too long they get quite puffy and loose some of their fresh taste.

When you remove your new citrus tree from the citrapot you will be amazed how large the tree's root system will be.  VERRY CAREFULLY spread out the root system somewhat to approximately  match the container you are going to replant into.  DO NOT BE IN A HURRY.  BE CAREFFUL NOT TO DAMAGE THE ROOT SYSTEM. DO NOT LET THE ROOTS DRYOUT WHILE YOU ARE TRAMSPLANTING THE TREE.   Using a water spray from a hose helps greatly.

Apply the fertilizer right after you up pot.

Well after reading Dr. Manners thoughts, I maintain my concern if the tree actually "came" from the leaf.  My remaining consideration is,  as Dr. Manners wrote, the tree most likely developed from an axillary bud that came along with the leaf when it was torn from the mother tree, and not from the leaf itself.  Whatever occurred, it is quite an amazing situation.  One in a million or even higher situation.  From time to time it would be great if you would keep this forum up to dated on how this tree does in the future. CONGRATULATIONS!

You can start now.  You grow your trees indoors, so they could be blooming now or in a week or two.
