+1 for the Excel handle with Schick blades; I've used them for years and have not found anything that works as well.

Mangomike, what kind of grafting are you doing with the Excel handle and Schick blades?  The species and type of graft might influence which knife is best.

I probably will buy that knife but am a little concerned about using it on harder wood where it might be more prone to blade breakage than a regular grafting knife.

Yes there is something better. The same set up but strop the blade with the green compound  or similar. I get 300-400 cuts from each blade.

John I agree with you, if you are doing hard wood or even budding you would want a more appropriate blade. I have several in my box. But for green softer wood, like young seedlings or green water shoots. There is nothing better. For the price is well worth it. I have a 5 year supply of both, handle and blades, Just in case they stop producing the blades. I also save my old one. They can be brought back on line with little work.

John,

I used o have a nursery in Hawaii, and used the Exacto to graft rambutan, jackfruit, durian, pulasan, avocado, mango, abiu, sapodilla, black sapote, and probably some others I am forgetting ATM...

I found that this tool works best with younger thinner wood. For species that tend to thicken up faster like mangos I would usually not use the Exacto on anything older than 1 year; after that I used a regular budding knife, which to me is much more cumbersome. I always tried to graft everything as young as possible, and the Exacto/Schick combination is perfect for that.

Just got this handy small stropping block. This can make the Schick blades last a life time and make them super sharp. Key to success.  Short video about 1 min.

I just clicked on the ling and it works.
any ways, here is the link for the store. Is the hand strop in suede, very important. get the green Micro fine honing compound, do not get the Abrasive powder. I have tested them both and the green is better.

If the links dont work go to sharpeningsuplies.com
I just reentered the link to the video, should work now. impressive to see what this does to the blade cutting paper.

I hit 5 local stores yesterday looking for the Schick injector blades.  Nobody carries old stuff anymore.  :o   One clerk laughed at me.  :-[    Feels like I'm stuck in a time vortex.

So I have to go online for this, right?   :P

Rehashing this topic. I ended up with the schick injector pack and somehow mistook that they were scalpel blade compatible.

Reading back through there is mention of knives that are no longer available.  The schick blades are much taller than hobby knife blades and won't fit in a standard hobby knife blade holder. The collet has to be pretty wide (almost 8mm). I cannot figure out which xacto hobby knife can accommodate these blades. Does anyone have an xacto knife part number?

The one Carlos uses in the video is super thick.

Hi Zands,

There are two types of hobby knife collet chucks, 1/4" and 3/8". The shlick blades are 8mm, and appear will only fit in 3/8" collet. The standard hobby knife that I have is 1/4" collet (I have 2 or 3). So which model has a 3/8" collet?

Seems like this is the only one that calls out the sizes:

I may have to go with this one....

Also X-Acto #2 handle.  Blades are good for de-suckering, but never for grafting--- you will cut yourself.
