Chilean Guava growth over time (2 years of photos)
« on: March 11, 2015, 07:17:27 PM »
I have a beautiful Chilean guava Ugni molinae in a part shaded area most of the day. Its in a fabric container (which I found that it seems to love). I think the key to keeping the Chilean guava happy is cooler root zone which others have mentioned here; http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=2166.msg30211#msg30211

I am hoping it flowers and fruits either this year or next, it seems like its big enough thats for sure :).

7/28/13, Summer growth flush a few months after getting the seedling.

3/18/14, Before the move to a fabric container.

2/28/15, After close to a year in a 10 gal fabric container.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Oh yeah, you should definately get some fruit this year. It looks great. Keep up the irrigation and filtered light/shade mix ,it seems to like the spot it's in now.

Oh yeah, that’s a lovely berry! There's no problem eating a medium-sized bush clean in a few hours  8)
Your plant seems good-sized; it should fruit sooner rather than later!

Neat growth picks Null! I appreciate the post as i just picked up several seedings. Will have to follow the rootpruning pot idea, as yours seems very happy.

i had planned on buying a Chilean Guava
and had decided against it, when i could not determine
if it would fruit here. (New Orleans 9b)

does someone here know if it should fruit in 9b ?

Its listed as hardy down to zone 8a, the only issue you may have is its tolerance to the heat and humidity. You may be able to keep it happy in dappled shade in a fabric container. Making sure the soil is moist during those heat waves.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Congratulation.

I tried growing two types of Chilean Guava from seeds that I obtained from Tradewinds long time ago. From my experience,  they are vulnerable to fungal attacks when they are young.

Nice job N/Z,
we get a lot of heat but not humidity, with shade it doesn't mind the heat.  It does however not like it's soil to dry out completely for a few days.....thankfully they are tough and recover nicely.

Your plant looks great Null!  Mine struggled for a few years in full sun (my mistake in picking the wrong planting location) but is taking off not that it is partially shaded by its Soh-shang and Cabudella neighbors.

I have 3 of these that are about 6 feet(2 meters) tall and have never fruited for me. I really don't understand why

i had read they could be hardy to 8
but, i also had read several accounts of people not being able to get them, to fruit.
i thought maybe they had "chill hours" like a blueberry ?

i do have a spot in the yard taht can give them afternoon shade and morning sun
its also fairly moist
One spot may be too moist, as it can rain for 3 days straight here sometimes
and saturate the ground (as well as humidity being very high)

at times we can go a month +, without rain too.
