Don't think anyone will have the cotton candy for a long time.

On occasion i've seen small seeds in these seedless varieties. Might be enough to propogate if you are savy enough. Lord knows Im not at that level.

These are unreleased varieties and there's no plan to release them. The breeder just plans to sell it as fruits. Seeds are your best bet.

Actually, you can grow grapes from the stems the grapes are attached to. If you can make it work, they will be true unlike seeds.

I know you can get a plant from a cell. It's easier to do it from meristem because it's already a tiny shoot that's also ready to put out roots if necessary. Are the cells on the stem easy to coax into turning into a new plant?

I can mail stems to EvilFruit if that's an option.

That is really cool, I didn't even consider using the stems.. Thanks Starling! :) This is why I joined this forum.. to learn.  I'll race you EvilFruit!  ;D  So is anything recommended when trying this beyond a fresh cut, a little rooting hormone and crossed fingers?

Most likely test tubes with sterilized nutrient gel that contains the hormone. You'd need to surface-sterilize the stems too.
I wouldn't expect a high percentage of success (bacterial contaminations, weak/dead grape cells), so do something like 24 tubes to be safe. Look up the recommended hormone and nutrient mix for grapes. There's usually some research paper on these things.

There are probably people here that's done plants from cell culture. Listen to those people when they speak up. I'm only sharing my perspective from edible mushroom culture with some information I read on plant tissue culture.

There are no seeds. I had couple kg this year and last year. Cotton Candy is very clean. No underdeveloped seeds.
But if anyone is confident to try their luck with stems, I can send them just for postage cost. You will probably need to get them by EMS before they dry out. And of course I have to find them first. They appear and disappear rather quickly.

I think they start coming out around the end of July. You can order directly from the grapery if you can't find them locally.

I had cotton candy last week. Unmistakable cotton candy bags with higher price go along. Flavor was off and season suppose to start end of next month only. Very strange.

I appreciate your offer But i highly doubt it will survive the trip. If you managed to grow CC Grape from a stem, please send me a message.

I'm interested in a few cuttings

Thanks Again

Well, mystery is solved. I was puzzled about Cotton Candy availability last week (when season only starts in August this year), and not impressive flavor at all compared to last year. Turns out they were grown in Mexico, and flavor is inconsistent from young vines. They are being licensed to grow all over the world. Expect them to see in Latin America, Europe, Australia..
There is even newer variety called "Gum drops", and people prefer them over Cotton Candy!!

kinda neat that anyone can clone a plant now.
i dont have the patience, or space for it though...

The local Sam's Club (Melbourne, FL) had Cotton Candy grapes from Mexico, yesterday (7-12), in 3 LB containers for about $8.
The regular green grapes in 3 LB containers were about $5.

They had these at Publix in South east Florida last year, devoured bag after bag. Had some a few weeks ago while on vacation in North Cali, saw them at a place called Berkley Bowl (in Berkley of course). Saw them, grabbed one, gave it to my cousin to try and asked him what does this taste like, his head snapped back LOL "Holy crap that tastes like cotton candy"   Showed em the bag, needless to say he bought several bags for family we had coming into to town to try LOL  I have been curious about the witch finger. But gumdrop??

Since I am home all day long (very boring), I wouldn't mind trying to propagate from stem cuttings  as well, if someone had a few cuttings they could spare.

I'm assuming these vines are patented and are not likely to be available any time soon.

This might give us hope... I'll have to check Berkely (about 1 hour away) but I would also be interested in some stems.
The hardest plants to grow are often those most worth growing.

It's way past grape season here. I don't think you will find them in the northern hemisphere this time of year.

Good luck to you with propagation. It's something I'd like to do but never got into.

Do they come true from seeds? I planted some. They are so tiny that I am not sure if they will even sprout at all.

You actually found seeds in the Cotton Candy grapes?  Were they fully developed?

I Just ordered Witch Finger Grape (aka Tear Drop) cuttings off Amazon.com . I hope I can get them to grow. Should I try to root them or graft them?

So you are saying/thinking/assuming the cuttings sold on amazon is the Grapery's Witch's Finger, now kbown as teardrop, grape?  No guarantee I am right but being a naysayer and a realist, doubt it is one and the same.

Can't help it, I have hope. Either way, it will give me something to do. I just got home from the beach here in Central Florida and pulled up 8 medium sized papaya plants from a vacant lot (one male, the rest females). Would loved to have gotten the larger ones (they already had fruit on them) but with the heavy fog, they were just too slippery to get a good grip on. Either way, can't beat free plants!!

Is it a patented variety? Seems like the creator doesn't want it to get out there. The grapes are grown here in SoCal.

I asked a guy that works with some of the vineyards in Bakersfield to bring me some cuttings. He told me that all commercially grown grape varieties are patented. He said he would bring me a few but not Cotton Candy or some variety called "Mango". He said they were EXTREMELY protective of those varieties and could get in trouble. Told him it was ok, if they were patented I didn't want any, as I didn't want him, or myself for that matter, to have any problems.

Ask your friend how much to make it worth the risk; I'll never tell.  :-X 8)
