Tommys. For $18.99 a box.

I'm just gonna leave that right there.

Hot water treated!  Talk about a warning label. Must be put there to sooth US Customs and inspectors. But as vile as they are, mangoes and avocados consumption (USA) goes up every year. They are "in" fruits. They are happening. You take that water treated mango and put it in a recipe with some sugar like a mango glaze or mango salsa and people will love it in Chicago and New York.

Waterbug,

Definitely...the worst deal ever.
I just bought a box of mangos from the same chain store (Artesia branch) for about the same price, but they were at least Organic Keitts, and were pretty good.

I think the imported Ataulfo cases were going for about the same price.  Those were definitely overpriced too.  Not sure what's up with the high prices in September.

I bought a box of ataulfo from their artesia store last week for the same price.  I think the reason for the high price is that it's the first crop from brazil (its spring in the southern hemisphere).  Early mangoes can command a higher price.  Having said that, paying that much for tommy's are crazy...  However the good news is that brazil is growing at least ataulfo commercially for export which means we should see some ataulfo into december and january in the grocery store.  That would extend the season a bit for us.

That is really bad.

There are Keitts from Mexico recently in Monterey Park for $7 or so. 4 fruits to a box, around 2lbs each fruit.

Hello my friends.

The region which produces the slide here in Brazil is suffering with several years of drought.
Irrigation from the São Francisco River is being rationed, besides this time of year have very little mango available.
Despite the mangoes produced in this region without much good and sweet because the weather is hot and dry, which improves the taste of fruits.I do not like mango flavor Tommy, I'm not even trees of this variety.

nelesedulis, I do not think TheWaterbug likes Tommy either. That's why it is a bad deal at that high price.

Yes, I had a few boxes of the gigantic Keitts earlier this month, and they were pretty good. Not as good as a Kent, but still pretty good.

But they also were $18.99 a box.

What varieties are left in the season for sale in Southern California? Or are we left with Tommys?

I get  ataulfo in Dec and Jan at Wall Mart in New Orleans - .38 cents each (last year)...
they are actually very good. i think they get past the hot-water treatment.
ive read some areas have the OK to bypass that.

Paying anything for Tommy Atkins is a bad deal. They're the sour oranges of the mango world.

No that's not right, sour oranges are useful (marinades, orange aid, ect) , TA mangoes are only good for compost.

I went to Wall Mart yesterday
they had mango from Brazil. they were hard as a rock, i could have used one as a hammer.
one or 2 were going rotten, and had never ripened.
no idea as to the variety, they were fairly small and kinda dark with lots of darker reds.
almost $2 each.

Is the red color due to the sun on all varieties, or just on some ?
