Going big at the Market

The season is just beginning for fruit and the signs are looking good.Look at the size of the mangoes with the big one being well over 2lbs.The lychees are tai so (mauritius is a tai so line),the mangosteens are whopping borneo small leafed,there are red dacca bananas and supersweet yellow burmese grapes....yum.In the next few weeks I will probably see 20 to 30 mango varieties and maybe 10 to 12 lychee cv's.Oh yeah the melon is just an orange fleshed mango melon.

Very nice haul, Mike.  I am assuming the smaller magoes are KP.  What is the larger mango?

Haus the smaller ones are actually 640g and over 700g and quite different from KP's.I don't know the name of either type of mango.The markets today had many varieties of mango I could not put a name to and only had local names on.

msk they are ceylon pisang and were dropped off by a friend who grows a few kinds of bananas.I ate a heap yestrday before I took the picture. I should mention how to tell burmese grapes from rambai and B.racemosa.It is the purple/red seeds that B.ramiflora have that makes it easy to identify them.The daccas are large bananas but this is not obvious in the picture.

I used to think ho-hum, who cares about bananas. But a ripe home grown banana is as good as a fresh fig. Similar consistency. As sweet, maybe sweeter. I have to eat the banana a tiny bit past ripe. Black blotches on the skin don't bother me.

Mike, of the bunch, it's the burmese grapes that I miss the most. They also remind me of langsat and longkong for which I crave.

They do taste good alright and are a great supporting act for lychees and mangosteen.I paid almost US$2-/LB for those babies so I was glad they were good.They handle cold better than B.motleyana and B.racemosa which are almost equatorial.The big pink 'mafai' are hard to find here but they would be the best to try in subtropical areas.
