The news on Durio macrantha this season is not good. The fruit promised to me will not be delivered as the whole crop seems to have failed.I had anticpated getting seeds spread around but that won't happen this year.

Oh, that's a shame. :-( I will keep my fingers crossed for the next year then. :-)

Sorry to hear Mike; how many trees are known in cultivation?

Soren I can only guess but the tree population appears to be somewhere between 5 and 10. All have been damaged by two Cat 5 cyclones in the last 6 years. No one has really thought about spreading the species or multiplying them as cyclone damage that wiped out orchards, infrastructure and buildings. The focus of everyone in the district seems to be about economic survival lately.

That does sounds like a species which needs a bit more spreading in range to ensure survival (apart from their should still be a chance for some numbers in its natural range) - any botanical gardens have shown interest?

D.macrantha was collected in the wild only once I believe and it has not been relocated by experienced campaigners who have searched. Whether Kostermanns' original tree still survives is anyones guess. It seems to be so rare and unknown that botanical garden and enthusiasts have not been able to secure specimens and it has not been high on their radar. They would not know who to express an interest with as well.

If the seeds reach the right persons than the survival is ensured
