Eugenia stipitata in bloom
« on: March 25, 2012, 10:00:13 PM »
Hi,

Just full of joy that one of my Eugenia stipitata plants are flowing now for the first time ever. I hope I will get fruit later on.

Cool. Have you tried the fruit before? I had it once... did not like it. Is there someway to make it taste better?

Excalibur had one at the plant sale this weekend. It was in a 3 gallon and about 2 ft tall and 2-3 ft wide. I think they have a bunch more at the nursery if anyone is interested.

Hi Murahilin,
what does it taste like? What I have read is that the fruit is really sour!

I have read that in Costa Rica some growers sell araza (E. stipitata) jam. Delicios from what I have read. Nice juice too with sugar. This is why I started growing araza. I want to make both jam and juice. I cannot wait to get a bunch of fruits.

Hi Tomas,

How long did it take for the tree to start to flower?

It was a few years ago but I remember it being really sour. I also tried it after eating a miracle fruit and it wasn't good then either.

Tomas, if you ever do make the jam, let us know how it is.

Congrats Tomas, this is one that for some reason I haven't picked up yet?  Cant wait for your taste report, maybe it'll finally get me off my backside and get one.  BTW, I believe you w/out the pics :) but they sure would be nice to see.

The araza (E. stipitata) another one of those fruits that's not good out of hand (unless you like the super sour), but great after some processing. As strange as it might sound they are great in milk shakes. Good in smoothies mixed with some sweeter fruits, like chico, or cherimoya. I've also heard they make great jelly, but haven't tried that yet. Another one that is similar in sour taste and large size is the Sundrop (Eugenia victoriana).

Hi,

I planted the seeds in April of 2009. Pictures below. Not much of a flower but it's there.

Amazing it flowered so small. My araza plants took what seemed like forever to flower and were huge before they did. But now they do make a lot of fruits.

Maybe it depends on the particular seed line. I have a few E. stipitatas and they all bloomed at a relatively young age/small size.

It is a nice fruit for processing. Although among the sour ones, Psidium acutangulum is now my new favorite.

They make the best sorbet (IMO). Better than Mundu or Yellow Mangosteen sorbet.

Tomas!

Good job!

I killed mine with too much city water (chlorine and high ph)  years ago, and also over watering didn't help either.

The fruits are large, juicy and extremely fragrant/flavorful, and tart...I love them with miracle fruit out of hand (although others don't).  Sugar and this fruit would make a dangerously delicious duo.

Hope that plant give u some fruits soon!
