avocado scion from young tree?
« on: October 11, 2013, 12:39:39 PM »
Hi everyone. I'm a complete grafting newbie. As in, I've never grafted anything. But I want to learn! I have quite a few seedlings that are just the right size for grafting. So now I need scions. Our neighbor has a tree that produces copious amounts of spectacular fruit, but the tree is very young - maybe 3 or 4 years old. I would love to take scions from this tree but I've read that a tree has to be 10 years old to produce viable scions - is this true?
Any advice or guidance on this topic is more than welcome - Thank you!

Those tree's should be fine for grafting because they bear fruit as you wrote.

I would try it.

The age of the tree is meaningless as long as it is producing fruit.

:D I cannot tell you how excited I am to hear this! I really want that fruit and I know it does well where we are so it couldn't be more ideal. YAY! So now, the tree already fruited this year and now is putting out new leaves - is this the time for scion-getting? I'm in an area where there isn't much temperature variation so whenever I read recommendations for when to get scions that talk about seasons it's lost on me. How do I know when is the right time?
Thanks again for your help!

Not true at all, people even graft seedlings that haven't even gotten close to producing fruit onto mature trees in the hopes of speeding up growth.

The right time is when your own tree is in growing modus. Here in Thailand we also don't have a real cold season, it is always hot.

I don't see any problem for you, just wait for your tree to start flushing and then make sure you have good scions to graft and Bob is your uncle. ;D

Go for it. That tree in your neighborhood must be a grafted tree so It does not matter.  Good luck.

Great I'm so excited thank you everyone for your reassurance. But to clarify, what am I looking for in a "good scion"? It should have plump leaf buds is that right? Same for the root stock? If you'd like to direct me towards your favorite videos or photo how-tos I'd be thrilled to see them too!

I'm so sorry I never thanked you for posting all these videos because somehow I missed this post! All of these people make it look so ridiculously easy don't they :). Anyway thanks so much - I've actually got 4 different grafts going now - none of them have died yet, so fingers crossed...
