Banana identification?!
« on: April 30, 2020, 06:25:47 PM »
I’ve tried getting this identified several times. If it’s too early in the fruit development please let me know. Some have guessed tall namwah or blue java. Any thoughts?

It does look like a blue java but hard to tell for sure.  They are definitely more blue than tall namwah.

Thanks spaugh. Any chance this is an inedible variety? I’m just hoping it’s edible otherwise I’d like To rip these clumps out haha!

They look like they will be ready later in summer, you could just wait and see how they turn out.  I dont see why thry wouldnt be edible, usually the ones that are just for looks are colorful or have some other visual features.

Good to know. I see so many large banana plants that produce tiny bananas. I wonder if it’s just due to neglect. I’ll definitely be trying them, but I’m impatient haha. They fruited November I believe, but really didn’t do anything but lose it’s leaves to frost all winter, so it’s still towaRd the beginning of its fruit stage

What is the height at the crown? (where the stem of the fruit bunch is coming out, that height)
Looks pretty tall in pics

The leaf edges and the backside of my banana leaf is pure green. It’s the only thing that’s making me think it’s not namwah or ice cream

Haha of course what is called blue java there and here could be different. My blue java fruit at approx 10ft and have a thinner pseudostem that almost always requires propping. They are a pain compared to namwah etc. for this reason. Fruit also looks a very different shape.

Just had a search and apparently they grow elsewhere much taller than they do here so maybe I spoke too soon? Mine are tissue cultured blue java from the largest supplier here, very confident they are blue java.

Here’s my fruit.

Yes, yours is the real Blue Java, and as you say, they do lean like crazy.

The unknowns look like Musa balbisiana, which does not produce edible fruit.  I grew it for a while by accident.  Received it as "Blue Java", but it was not.

It does, but the shape of the male bud is different as is the way the bracts on it open.

Haha! I give up trying to id. I’ll hope for the best and rip them all out if they suck. I’m only a couple months away at most anyway.
