I just recently found someone selling Ilama seeds and was thinking about purchasing them but had never heard of them before. Do they not grow true to seed and that's why grafted ones are preferred? Or is it to speed up the time to fruit? Do they grow well in Central/South Florida?

From what I understand they are almost impossible to sprout from seed. That's why most people look for grafted seeds. They also aren't true to seed either  like most annona fruit.

*Bump*

I have found a pink ilama but am looking for a pure red or white variety (grafted),  I've also added that I'm looking for a 'Painter' cherilata as well.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Re: WANTED: velvet apple seeds

I bought velvet apple seeds from Luc last year and they arrived in Irma's aftermath. Every one of them sprouted and was growing well until I had the misting system on and they were moist when the night time temperature dropped below 50 F. All but 6 died within one day. So keep them on the dry side, especially if cool night time temperatures are expected. I hope to order more seeds from Luc this year now that my propagation area has been rehabilitated.
I had one that I lost to that, the other laughed through 29 degrees while putting out new growth. I love these guys

I'm in South Florida and tried to grow Marang for 30 seeds, all die even though I have successful germination. I tried indoor light, shade, full morning sun (all in potting soil in small pot). How do you guys get it to grow more than 5" tall? Anyway, I went to Excalibur as I read that someone saw they have Marang a while back ago. Richard told me to get Pedalai as it taste similar but better, and they will have Pedalai soon.

So, since Marang is such a pain the rear to grow, do you think Pedalai is a good substitute?

Also, with global warming, may be South Florida will get the climate like Miami/Key West in a couple years, so by than may be Marang (even Durian) will fruit in South Florida?

I have seeds of both species going. Some elephant jack seeds as well. That being said other than this winter it has been quite rare for me to get nights below 30. I'd say that many species are within the realm of possibility if they are properly protected from the cold. I'll have to see how the marang do long-term, but I'll probably wait until they are quote large to put in the ground.

I'm thankfully far enough from the sea that I have nutral ph soil, but close enough to have milder winters. My soursop made it through no problem but it's in a protected position. If I plant any marang in the ground I'd assume I should do the same. Even with the bad cold snaps my yard stayed in the low 30s.

Great timing for this post
I have wanted to ask the forum about their experience germinating sugar apple seeds.
Earlier this year I received 10 Big Red Seeds in trade for 10 Na Dai seeds,  The member told me to
put them between damp paper towels and put in a baggie. After 4 days one germinated and within
2 weeks all 10 seeds had germinated and had emerged from the soil. I had gotten 25+ seeds from a
local fruit and tried to germinate them the same way. They took a little longer but within 4-6 seeks they
all germinated, Then I got the indigo seeds and 2 out of 7 germinated and the VSA I got 1 out of 8 to
germinate, and I tried to germinate a different red type and 1 out of 5 germinated but then 3 more germinated
after several months 4 out of 5 I can live with, I also had 0 out of 3 germinate out of a super large one?
I was thinking maybe it is later in the year but I tried to germinate 10 seeds from a Na Dai I produced and within 2 weeks
all the seeds germinated. All I can say is the seeds are still in damp paper towels and I keep checking them.
I am wondering why some seeds were so easy. I was under the impression all the seeds were fresh?

Of the experience I've had with sugar apple seeds, if you keep them warm they will germinate in two weeks. They also seem to germinate best when planted in soil and sown in a group. I also got the Isan indigo seeds and 4 of the 7 I have gotten sprouted so far. It's been about 2 weeks and I've kept the pot I planted them in at about 80 degrees.

Hi everyone, I'm DJ. I originally got into growing plants to feed my reptiles (two red foot tortoises, and a canary island lizard.) I have a few other ones but they don't eat greens. After a while I just had fun growing things, and poof now I grow exotic fruit in my backyard. I live in sunny south west florida and am fascinated by annona fruits. I'm looking foward to all of the things I can learn from and share with this forum.

I don't believe that plants or wildlife are allowed to leave Australia. I could be wrong but I know that wildlife exportation isn't possible.
