naners, figs, eggfruit -pics of the yard and suggestions ?
« on: August 15, 2016, 04:22:16 PM »
They had Eggfruit on sale at Toptrops
i had got it delivered and my contractor was out of town
it sat in the shipping bag for a week before i was able to plant it.
it seems no worse for wear. its been planted now for a week
and looks pretty happy.

the dog chases lizards
often knocking down plants and fruit in the process
i gotta live with it, shes too cute.
she eats fallen fruit too

Now, i am not sure what to put in those front planters  ??
there is another one on the other side of the driveway

i am thinking ...

 Jambul/Java Plum
 neem
 Ice Cream Bean
 carob

i wouldn't mind putting in mango, but its pretty exposed,
no plants close by for protection.
The Java plum is already pretty big, im just worried it will
become a huge tree in just a few years, i hear they grow fast.

neem

Jambul/Java Plum

Ice Cream Bean

carob

heres my nana with its first fruit

-

red jaboticaba, blood orange, guava, mulberry, autumn olive

and backyard

starfruit, jujube, Feijoa, acerola, lemon guava, passioflower

FIG !

Wow, that eggfruit tree was in a bag for a week and now looks like that? Wonderful. Of all your choices, I'd put a mango in the other planter. I understand that it can get pretty cold there, I've had an unknown mango in the ground in my yard for a few years, low 30s and occasional high 20s haven't been able to kill it.

Neem would be tough and drought tolerant. Also no fruit to entice passers by out by the street 😉

Very nice. Your fig tree looks healthy and full. What
kind is it?

Hi! Congratulations, your trees are great! What do you do with your neem tree? I have one too... no use yet!

Nice pics, I would consider a fig for front yard.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

not sure
got a cutting from a repossessed house :)
i asked at figs4fun forum
and they said they thought probably celeste.
they  said Celeste grows fast and is very productive in the South
its less than 3 yrs from cutting.
now, if i can  keep the rats away ...

i have a couple of mango from seed
1 produced 1 fruit already, it was really good.
i have it on the south side of a large wooden fence, and behind a small mulberry
im thinking that should protect it pretty well
the one in the container i was thinking of putting next to the house
for warmth.

Wouldnt Ice cream bean be more frost hardy than mango ?
or not ?

neem has tons of uses.
i nibbled on a couple of leaves, and the taste was not bad
no medicine taste like i thought it would be.
it kills bad gut bacteria,  and helps the immune system...

but i got it to use the leaves for chop+drop mulch and compost.
also to extract oil and use in soap and shampoo, great for skin.
there is a low-tech way to extract the seed oil.
the leaf mulch has mosquito-repellent properties, which is another reason i got it.
it seems i get bit my mosquitos daily.
i figure if i spread enough leaves around, they wont breed in my yard anymore.

use the oil with water and soap for aphids

Neem mixed with compost and its components introduces azadirachtin into your plants and provides systemic protection. Neem is an antibacterial but true to form, neem has little negative effect on good soil bacteria. Neem also helps control nematodes, root born fungus, viruses and other soil-borne issues.

We recommend introduction of neem leaf into our vermi-composting.  Red Wigglers (Eisenia foetida) love neem leaf added to feedstock
