Barhi date season is in full swing
« on: August 17, 2017, 06:46:13 PM »
It lasts only a month here in the states. And the Coachella Valley is cranking them out now in week 2. I don't really care for medjools(we used to have battles throwing them at each other when we were kids), unless they are really dry but I LOVE fresh barhis!

I got some from a middle eastern store here yesterday. I'm ripening them in a paper bag for a few days before trying them.

How much are they going for retail? They're pretty expensive in the first part of the season. Like around $2.50/lb wholesale

If you pass by there again, I'd be curious to know if that box has a stamp or sticker with the farm on it, or if there's none at all. 10,000 lbs of barhis were stolen the other day from a rancher here. That's about 30 trees worth.

Not a big deal. Just curious. Barhis aren't like medjools and deglets with 10s of millions of pounds produced every year. Even a small volume hitting the market can attract attention if it's from an unknown source. Most barhis in the US come from the Coachella Valley and only about 6 ranches/brokers handle 80+% of the sales.
