Dovyalis hybrid (tropical apricot)
« on: March 23, 2013, 05:15:20 PM »
a few days ago I tasted a hybrid dovyalis, with no seeds or thorns...the fruit is nice, and reminiscent of a small peach...somewhat tart,  but they get sweet if they're really ripe.

is anyone growing this one? or does anyone have comments about this tree?

I've heard that there are some sweet and good tasting hybrids out there, I think developed/selected in Israel (?). So far I've only tasted D. caffra and D. hebecarpa: Not really worth growing. In fact I think I will cut down both caffras I'm growing.

I thought it came out of USDA Miami... just back from google and here it is

A hybrid Dovyalis, resulting from open pollination between two plants growing on the Station, Dovyalis abyssinica (A. Rich.) Warb., and Dovyalis hebecarpa (Gardn) Warb., has been widely distributed because of fruit quality and productivity

Hmmm... maybe you didn't eat a decent caffra? I think the literature grossly under rates it and that it is almost a first classfruit. Hebecarpa is noticeably more sour.

thanks for the link Recher ... that must be the one I have.

I agree...its a great fruit, and no pests seem to bother it.  I think the season is much longer than any true apricot, or comparable prunus sp.

Sounds to me Adam like what you are describing is a cultivar called Prodigal. I got it from the now infamous Murray many years ago. Like you said, it is seedless, and almost totally thornless. In mature trees if you look carefully you can find a very few big thorns on the trunk. Yes Recher is right, these were developed in Florida, not Israel. I like the Prodigal fruit very much. It's not the sweetest of the tropical apricots, i've tasted some sweeter seedling here, but i like that it's seedless and thornless. Great fruit for juicing. If you mix it with any sweet fruit it turns out great and gives the juice a very tropical taste. Also this tree is extremely productive.

It's a great fruit! Especially for those of us who don't mind a bit of tart. BTW, very easy to start from cuttings, grows very fast, fruits very fast, produces tons of fruit. I think this fruit has a LOT of commercial potential in fruit juice making industry. We just need to claim high levels of anti oxidants or aprhodisiac qualities and watch the sales take off.  ;)

I started a plant from cuttings over a year ago, it is finally starting to put out some good growth.  Hopefully it'll be worth the wait.

Dovyalis hybrid aka Florida Apricot is supposed to be better than its parents and you can google much info about it.The thorns are supposed to reduce with age.I have some small ones growing and I am optimistic about how they will turn out.

Saw a ceylon gooseberry at Exotica today and my research led me here.

There's a tropical apricot  tree at Broward Colelge and while it tastes good, it doesn't have much flesh.

Caffra and good tasting
Do you know if caffra normally developd thorns while in seedling phase or only later?
I keep waiting for thorns to develop and mine are many months old with many leaves and branches?

Abit of topic but have you ever come across wild apricot? Ancylobotrys capensis it's closely related to Landolphias and I believe it's native to your neck of the woods?

I would kill to get my hands on some seeds!

This was one of the first rare fruits I got back in 2004 when I started collecting. Fruit of tropical apricot are nice but can be too sour if not just ripe. I have lots of relatives of it now too and can't wait until the ketembella starts to produce. I'm growing kei apple from 5 sources and hope to see differences between them once they are all producing. I'm also growing lovi and governors plum now. I'm got to try the sweet lovi here and still think tropical apricot and a good kei are still the top of the bunch in my book. I was in Tanzania last summer and tried the Sabia species there. I too would really like to find Ancylobotrys capensis, those fruits look so beautiful.

I have tasted some off the tropical apricots. However I don't know which was which. The flavor of the ones that have had a slight fuzz on the skin ranged from totally bland to very bad. The ones I tasted that had skin that was smooth with tiny specks was very delicious. A good balance of tart and sweet. The smooth skinned type had thorns on the plant and the seeds I planted from it started producing in two years.

My understanding is that dovyalis are generally dioecious - does the same apply to the hybrid?
