Unknown citrus
« on: June 29, 2019, 02:50:33 PM »
I bought this about 4 years ago. Due to illness I had not been able to do any gardening for about 4 years. I went out this spring to do so cleanup and I found the little citrus still alive in a 4" pot and it was still alive. Of course I had a wow! moment. It had grown as much as it could in a 4" pot with a few roots in the ground. 4 years of winter in a 4" pot in zone 8a. I bought it off Ebay and the seller says he did not know which orange it was but that it was a sweet orange. If I had planted it 4 years ago it would be large enough to bear fruit. It was a rooted cutting. I had my doubts back then that it would be sweet, but maybe. I am wondering now if maybe it is a Chansha mandarine. It has grown a lot since I planted it so maybe in a couple years more I will see fruit. It is about 3 1/2 feet now.

I usually save the .jpeg file on my computer then "add image" from local drive.

They lied to you. It's trifoliata or a hybrid of it.

It has sets of 3 leaves. That means it's either trifoliate or a trifoliate hybrid.

You might have bought it as "Japanese Bitter Orange", a relatively common garden ornamental.
Or it's possible the top part orange died and what's left is the trifoliate orange rootstock it was growing on.

It's most likely not going to taste good (unless this happened to be some rare unusual trifoliate hybrid, which is not likely).

My best suggestion to taking advice on citrus is to look at their own citrus collection. It speaks volumes on who you should trust for advice.

I bought it as a rooted cutting from a sweet orange. I had my doubts. Well if it is trifoliate then I will use it to practice my grafting.

There's nothing sweet about trifoliata. Once it fruits it will be easier to tell what it is. If it's pure trifoliata it will produce golf ball size fuzzy fruit. Either way, it;s not something you will enjoy eating. It is indeed a great rootstock, or ornamental tree in a cold location.

Most pure trifoliata have similar size leaves, yours seems to have an elongated center leaf which would indicate possibly a citrange. Swingle has a much longer center leaf, so it's not swingle.

Laaz you are correct about that center leaf. I would not mind a hybrid. Can you use trifoiiata to make orange marmalade I'm like Paddington I really like orange marmalade.

Ummmmm.... No. Lmao! Trifoliata has a very nasty taste. The juice is very gummy.

I have read that some people use it to make orange-aide. I looked it up after posting the question and found this site.

Once you rub the skin off your tongue to get the trifoliate resin off you will know that nothing edible comes from trifoilate.

All of the trifoliata images I have seen show curled and distorted stems. The stems on this unknown are straight.  Will there be any trifoliata with straight stems like this?

Flying dragon has contorted stems. Standard trifoliata doesn't.

It is not a Poncirus trifoliata on the second picture.

It's a root stock that had Owari grafted to it. What do you think it is? It looks like the trifoliata where I got the fruits for my seedlings.
