Abius - In shade or out in sun, when?
« on: May 13, 2021, 05:08:44 AM »
My abius are in half gallon pots and are about 8 to 10 inches tall.

They seem healthy enough but I've kept them pretty shady.  They are recovering from being very recently moved up into their larger (1/2 gal.) pots and are just starting to show some new leaf growth.

How soon would it be advisable to start moving the abius into brighter sunlight –or at least into less shade?

And as a tangential question, I have several green sapotes, also currently being kept in 50% shade.  They are about 12 to 14 inches tall and sturdy.  When should I start to increase their sunlight?

Suggestions, advice, please . . .

I have an abiu and a green sapote, both ~3ft tall and flowering for the first time.  I have them in the sunniest part of my greenhouse, and when it warms up a bit more here I will move them out into full sun.  I am in PA so less intense sun than you might have at lower latitudes, but the limited info I could find suggests that Pouteria like full sun.

I have found abiu to be an extremely hardy plant, i planted mine in full sun with no shade cloth at about 2ft high and it hasnt looked back, i also have seedlings growing and they are powering.  Certainly a 10x tougher plant than mangosteen or durian.

Interesting to know, thanx, Gone troppo!  Here in Florida 9b the biggest concern I have would be that of cold weather that we occasionally experience here. We do freeze where I am on rare occasion.

To that end is there any incidence of some/any particular Abiu seedlings which have shown that they can take more cold.  If so how low?  Anyone on here have any experience with such a 'cold-tolerant' Abiu??

Certainly don’t mind full sun in south east Queensland. Mine are in full sun all day. 1 year old and almost a metre tall. Days up to 45 degrees and zero humidity were no problem. The only real issue I have is scale infestation.

Damn didn't know that about mangosteen and durian. Just had a mangosteen die from too much sun after living through a flood 6 months ago. Durian and mangosteen like semi shade or just shade till they get established than full sun ?

I’ve had several die in an unheated greenhouse come winter in 10B with no frost. They’ll def need some kind of heated greenhouse or be brought inside during winter.

I recently got some tataruba seeds germinating from “Columbo” that he said are a bit more cold hardy than other Abiu varieties, so fingers crossed. If these don’t make it I’m throwing in the towel.

Mine go under shade cloth 50-70%

I’ve grown all my abius in full sun from around 18” talk or so. Never really had problems as long as they were well watered.
