Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lychee varieties
« on: February 12, 2021, 11:46:55 PM »
Unfortunately the location of these trees east side of my house is where all of my utilities are buried underground no doubt the roots are under these things and the trees are close to my house so i think that stump removal will be out of the question i plan to have them grinded down to ground level given the unpredictability of the lychees im leaning more towards sapodilla and annonas maybe a jambu planted as far away from the stumps i can

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lychee varieties
« on: February 12, 2021, 01:37:35 PM »
I am having some large oak trees removed on my property this spring and would like to plant some lychees in the cleared out space. I really enjoy eating lychees and i have none planted currently. My questions are to the people that have lychees growing would you plant them again? I keep reading how unproductive they are and how much maintance they are to get a few pounds of fruit living in florida that sounds an awful lot like growing citrus now. What varities would you recomend or what other fruit trees would you plant there instead ( no more mangos i have 14 looking for something different)

Citrus General Discussion / Citrus in florida
« on: January 24, 2021, 08:56:58 AM »
The only thing missing in my yard has been citrus im in central/south florida. Ive been very hesitant about growing citrus because of the greening but today home depot had some on sell and for the price i said what the hell. From some things i heard these trees do well in partial shade? Like close to an oak tree?. I dont really have any other option as my full sun spaces are occupied by mangos and other large trees that i know will do well. My last question is the varities i got are they doomed or maybe have a chance to thrive in like 30% shade conditions? I got a lisbon lemon. Sunburst tangerine, some type of kumquot already lost the tag but it starts with a c and is varigated. Lastly a key lime any feed back would be great thankyou

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango trees not growing
« on: August 05, 2020, 09:06:01 PM »
I planted multiple varities of mango trees two years ago all from three gallon pots. These trees have not grown at all my question is why. Ive fertilized them with various brands from home depot they get sun most of the day. What seems to happen is about once a year they try to push some new growth but the leaves are very small and the flush is only 1 or two inches long. 1 probelm could be the rains this year my backyard where they are is prone to standing water in heavy rains the past few months all record highs have made my yard a swamp about half the summer thus far but the trees were still not doing anything prior to the heavy rains. Im just seeking advise on what to do to get these trees going. Mango trees in the front yard grow just fine.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango Id

Can anyone help me I’d this mango has a pleasant taste moderate amount of fiber the tree is around 30ft tall most of the mangos are around 1lb. It’s on my grandfathers land next to an old Haden that’s 60+plus years old so I’d imagine this tree is also an old school Florida mango or possibly a seedling?

There is a Japanese company that makes some very nice ones however they are rather expensive but the taller ones have a platform at the top they seem really nice

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Staking Trees for Wind?
« on: September 05, 2017, 08:41:54 PM »
I would thinking staking will increase the odds of them snapping depending on how young your trees are they will be much more flexible than a mature tree my plans for my trees are bend don't break

Gradually introduce more sun slowly to avoid burning

« on: August 22, 2017, 06:09:38 PM »
At least for me the nematodes were a huge problem for my figs so when I bought new ones I cut out a hole in the bottom of a five gallon bucket. The nematodes are mostly in the top 18 inches of the soil so if you have a barrier it helps the trees planted like these are doing much better than those not

« on: August 20, 2017, 12:19:33 PM »
I'm for it I would never use an inorganic fertilizer either you seem to have a good plan as for you original question don't worry about the ratios I've used some of them before look into the cost of each bag and how much you will be needing if you have a lot of trees it can get expensive pretty quick.
