Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help ID malay apple
« on: June 15, 2017, 04:30:10 PM »
I bought 5 white malay apple seeds from fruitlovers a few years ago and 1 looks different than the other 4, I have a red malay apple and it looks similar but i don't think its a red, when i bought the seeds they had purple malay apple seeds available also so maybe a purple was put in with the white, which would be cool.

The one i think might be a purple flowered for the first time also. I will be planting them in the ground soon and i wanted to put the red, white and a purple next to each other, wanted to make sure it was properly ID

This is the one that i think is the purple, The color at the base of the leaf is darker than the red.

This is a red

This is a white

Tropical Fruit Discussion / ID and update
« on: June 05, 2017, 10:35:02 PM »
Picked up this coconut palm for $25, Just checking to make sure its correctly ID, it looks like my red dwarf, wanted to make sure.

My neighbors brought me this fruit, it stinks but it taste pretty good, the shell is tough and the inside is powder, i forgot the name.

This french peanut is growing into the ground so i was just going to cut the pot and leave it alone, think it will produce in such a tight space right next to my magnolia tree?

This avocado seedling looks like its throwing out a flower, anyone know what its doing?

Updates on some trees

Purple forest guava produced 2 fruit, pretty stoked

My Kepel tree from Excalibur i picked up last year didn't look to good when i picked it up, it was in a perforated 7 gal pot and around 8 feet tall so it was a bit neglected being a long taproot tree. It lost all its leaves when i transplanted it and cut the pot from the roots and i didn't know if it was going to make it, I put it into the richest soil i had and added every microbe and bacteria to it, 8 months later it started growing new growth but all the leaves kept dying and falling off, its doing great now and exploding with new growth

When it lost its leaves

its crooked in the pot from wind, didnt stake it but i didn't want to mess with it so i leaned it against my fence

Ilama is fruiting again, hopefully it will produce a mature fruit, last couple years the fruit kept falling off. Its in a 45g pot

Geffner Atemoya is fruiting for the first time

Surinam cherry decided to fruit also for the first time, trees about 5 or 6 years old, Their pretty good, I also saw a black surinam cherry on a 2 year old plant, it didn't fully develop and was musky.

My Jamaican cherry is really starting to produce heavy, the fruit is so good, im going to try and make juice.
Ive been picking this amount daily for the past couple weeks

I bought a noni tree a couple months ago around 8 feet tall, Produced its first fruit and i have to say it really does smell like stinky cheese, Didn't eat it yet, just savoring the smell ;)

a bunch of plants are flowering like acerola, peanut butter fruit (B. armeniaca), jackfruit which has fruit now forming, random guavas and passionfruit, a bunch of citrus is flowering and fruiting, papayas, bananas, various eugenia, some inga trees, candle stick tree, annatto, sapodilla (molix), Guarana and a few others. Im stoked ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Whats up with my pickering mango
« on: November 26, 2016, 12:44:06 AM »
Curious what's going on, it looked fine until a month ago when leaves started falling off the top branches and some burning and yellowing showed but Most the leaves look great. Haven't done anything different so figured i would seek help. Just watered it with micros, kelp, humic acids and yucca extract so it would help the nutrients absorb better.

Also the tree is growing mostly to one side which was facing the sun, how should i balance it out with trimming or will it balance out on its own.

« on: April 06, 2016, 11:39:40 PM »
Could i fit 3 or 4 jaboticabas (sabara, red hybrid, white, grimal or trunciflora, havent decided) in this space thats 2 feet wide by 14 1/2 feet long. I dug it 4 1/2 feet deep and filled 4 feet with compost and 1 1/2 feet with garden soil.

There is also an itchy ball tree on the other side of the fence but i completely removed every root on that side.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Germinating mango seed question
« on: March 14, 2016, 10:47:35 PM »
I had a delicious mango my friend brought me and im unsure of the variety but im trying to germinate the seed. It sprouted a root but i checked on it today and half the root was brown, am i under watering it or over watering it? i water when the soil dries out. Do you think it will still sprout?

I throw mango seeds in my yard all the time and they seem to be growing everywhere but when i try to sprout one i find it more difficult.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Opinions on a custom soil blend
« on: March 07, 2016, 07:17:11 PM »
Im ordering 20 Cu.yards of a custom soil blend and i just wanted to get opinions from the professionals if it will be a good neutral soil for a variety of trees.

It consists of 30% peat moss, 50% 3/8 inch pine bark, and 20% cedar sawdust. PH 6.0.

What do you think, it will be used in pots from 1 gallon to 20 gallon and the remaining will be thrown in my yard.

« on: February 19, 2016, 10:24:58 PM »
I have a great spot for my kepel tree but its 7 feet from a magnolia tree, is that too close. The magnolia is trimmed straight up so its like a canopy tree completely open. Just making sure before a plant the kepel, anyone know if it will be fine

« on: February 17, 2016, 07:59:16 PM »
I ended up renting a car for the day and decided, im going to Excalibur :D About a 3 hour trip, I made it there 25 Min before closing but spent over an hour going through all the plants as im not going to make another trip down there anytime soon. That place is GREAT, its like a tropical fruit jungle, i felt right at home. I recommend anyone that wants to get a good collection of exotic fruit trees to check it out, all the trees look great. The staff were very helpful and showed me around the whole nursery, I got to try soursop for the first time, took home some black sapotes, and bought a few dozen malaysian coconuts.   Thanks to Rob for helping me out with picking out the best trees, I ended up with

mangos
Venus
Mahachanok
Pina Colada
Fairchild
Lemon Zest
Keitt
Sweet Tart

Jackfruit
Excalibur Gold
Dang Rasimi
Krunchy Lemon
Mai1
Mai3
and thanks to Sayyid (as this trip was last minute and unplanned) who brought me a Red morning and Excalibur red last week, I got every Jackfruit i wanted from there except the J31 but im good without ;D

I also got a Red Lime thats already fruiting, key lime, Fairchild and Trompo canistel, Green sapote, Abiu, Malaysian coconut palm, african gold guava, A beautiful 7g custard apple, Black Sapote, and i would have to say the best deal most awesome tree a 9 ft Kepel for $65 ;D ;D ;D ;D

So i would have to say it was a successful trip, Filled the van to the Max.

That place gets a 2 thumbs up rating from me. Its definitely a place to visit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / old school mangos
« on: February 13, 2016, 06:51:01 PM »
Ive been seeing a bunch about all the new mango's coming out but haven't seen as much talked about the old school original mango's, maybe they are talked about but im not too familiar with all the mango's out there and when they were developed, so i wanted to dedicate a thread on what were some of the best mango's of the 19th and 20th century or earlier as far as overall taste. I know its a hard question to agree on a good taste but im looking to add some of the original mango strains to my collection and im wondering which were highly sought after.

Also to be precise what time of the year they come out, how long they hold on the trees and how long they last after being picked.

Is there anyone who lives in south florida or in central florida thats planning on going to Excalibur willing to buy and ship me a Excalibur red, Excalibur Gold and Red morning Jack fruit, I will compensate for the plants, shipping and your time. If you live in central florida i could meet up with you. I have no way of getting down there and bringing the plants here and was looking forward to be able to get them for spring planting. I tried going through my nearest nursery and had no luck. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Artocarpus cross pollination question
« on: December 28, 2015, 08:31:58 PM »
I have 15 species of artocarpus growing and im planting them in a group, I was wondering if there could be a chance of cross pollination between varieties as in Pedalai (Artocarpus sericicarpus) pollinating Mentawak (Artocarpus anisophyllus) or Monkey Jack (Artocarpus rigidus) or any other mix and match to hybrid the fruit or seeds? any possibility of hybridization with this family?
