Those facebook groups are the worst.

Thank you for sharing that very informative video, I'm a nooby grower so info like this from someone in the know helps out big time! I did what he suggested in planting a resistant variety of mango tree, I read Pickering was somewhat resistant, but I think I read that here on this forum about Pickering so I planted one as my first mango tree.

if you can get taitri, which is hardy in zone 7, use that as a rootstock and you won't have to wait decades. I have a graft on taitri outdoors which has outgrown the original prague I bought from Stan that is on poncirus (2-3 years ago) in just a season.

I really appreciate it when people source scientific literature. Btw I really enjoyed your old posts about your gh. Unfortunately, I found them after I had built mine so I was unable to use your wisdom.

I ended up cracking the base of a 5yo vine in a large pot they get very brittle. It looked intact but u could see the vine just dry up.

I currently have 2 purple in 35 gallon pots 3 and 1 yo. Looks like I may get 75 fruits this spring. I am curious about what is the max number you could grow in a large container? I staring doing proper pruning (not perfect) this year and it made a difference.

I planted mine out recently in Jan after it's taproot started poking out of it's pot, I think it was either a 3 or 5 gallon?  It seems to be a pretty tough tree for our area so far.

Just measured it, it's about 20 inches tall now.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Origin of cultivated mangosteen

In the past, we've discussed possible varieties of mangosteen and what a pain figuring out the common and scientific names of all the others.  Confusing to say the least.  I bring this up due to someone from one of the Facebook groups in Australia recently inquiring as to why it is so difficult to get these names correct or why two garcinias may be called the same name.  I came across this recent publication, and while long and technical, I did find it interesting.  It discusses the origins of mangosteen and the few varieties that may be available.  I got the impression that there was one section that seemed to harbor some doubt on this, but maybe I understood it wrong.  It does open your eyes to the difficulty of identifying the genetics of the most popular garcinia.  Is it any wonder very little effort/expense has gone into the rest?  I thought Mike T at least would be interested in this.
