I forgot to mention sumo. Many people who tried my sumo said it was really good tasting this year as well. Fruits are larger than an orange and is sweet with some tartness.

sc4001992,

Is Honey the California Honey, which the real name is "W. Morcutt"?  Are there flavor difference other than seeds vs seedless between Morcutt vs W. Morcutt?  I often found the store bought Morcutt has a sort of smoke flavor not sure it is true.

Citrus General Discussion / Xie Shan grafted on satsuma and clementine tree
« on: November 21, 2023, 11:27:05 PM »

The first pic shows the fruits of Xie Shan grafted on a young satsuma tree.   The fruits on this tree have slightly tough ceil and slightly dry if compared with the ones on Clementine tree.   Their sizes and appearances also varied a lot.

The second pic shows the fruits of Xie Shan grafted on a 10 years old clementine tree.  The quality of fruits is much better, with much uniform size and appearance.  They both ripe at about the same time, with slightly clean taste when compared with an old satsuma tree.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: CLM & Citrus Canker
« on: August 01, 2023, 01:29:08 PM »
I have noticed no CLM so far this year. Normally they are a plague. We experienced a deep freeze to around 10 F this winter, maybe the local population has been eliminated.  But I was more consistent with spinosad and neem sprays this summer which work very well together than in the past. Its possible that spinosad would work almost as well on its own if you are concerned about oil burn.  If you have fire ants, spinosad works really well and also on stink bugs on vegetables. Its a great organic pesticide.  But you have to watch the way it has been stored. It can degrade so  look for a reputable supplier. I have bought from Amazon and was disappointed.  This year, I got it from seven springs and am pleased. I also really like neem oil and I use it all the long hot summer. I spray my trees with neem after 6 pm and never get sun burn from the oil.  The trees will look bright and shiny the next day.
By the way, avoid oil, if you used copper or sulfur on the trees within the last month, I haven't made this mistake with citrus, but I have nearly kill peaches this way.
Very helpful info.  I didnt do much for the spring flush which was ok.  For the summer, I didnt get much new flushes, so I just spot spray which worked most time.

How is everyone doing with CLM?  I just start to see CLMs on a few of new flushs.

I ate a Sumo last spring.
I planted some seeds.
One is flowering.

That is really fast.  Usually, it takes several years to flower.

Pomelos of that type are very common in Asia (China, Vietnam). But are not the typical pomelo sold in the U.S. (Chandler pomelo, with a pink inside).
I actually prefer the Asian pomelo (although Chandler is not bad). Majority of American consumers prefer sweeter and prefer no seeds.
Because the asian pummlo are so big, a couple fo seeds dont really bother the eaters that much as the mandarines do.

We ran into terrible fruit at Winn Dixie this week. The culprit were force ripened strawberries on BOGO sale. Now I know why they were on sale. No flavor at all. Terrible. Force ripened fruit should be banned.

I am fully with you for banning force ripened fruits. However, most fruits in market either are force ripened or far from ripened because they have to be picked, stored, and shipped to stores and still appear perfect.

Too late now, I will start eating them soon and get it off and trim the tree back.  My other citrus trees look similar.   I will post pics of another mandarin tree thats 8 years old and is even more crazy than this one.  The gold nugget is around 5 years old.
The real problem is: From March to June, the fruits will get much sweeter, but it may lead the tree into alternative bearing.

brian,

Since you are away from most citrus communities, it is worth to try clementine.   It is easily available from HD.   Its fruits have a richer and sweeter taste than Owari, easy peel and with no seed if not cross polinated by Lemon, grapefuit, valency, etc.

To me, we all like clementine better than Owari, but to keep the bees off is a little bit of work.

A idea to protect citrus from greening which might be only suitable for structure (such as greenhouse) protected citrus tree:

Bifenthrin can be effective for 12 months or more, so it can be applied to the young citrus to provide a long and effective protection.    The advantage is that it is not toxic to humans or animals once it is dried.  It is not recommended for fruit bearing trees.  The downside is that any insects cruising around in the structure will be eliminated.

I guess it can also be used in young tree in open space but many other insects will be killed.

Good reading here regarding mesh density required to control HLB psyllids. I was about to order some mesh screening from Amazon but after reading this I'm glad I didn't. It takes a 40-mesh or 50-mesh to exclude an HLB psyllid. Psyllids are 1/16 - 1/8 inch, and Amazon sellers don't list the mesh size. I am awaiting a return call from  my county extension for help locating a couple of pieces of the correct mesh to use for my Sugar Belle (just arrived yesterday and it's a really nice one).

Maybe I should research no-seeum screen, which should be pretty easy to locate.

Ebay also sells these net.  You can contact the vendors to ask the screen size.

"20-40 days of dekopon storage post-ripening were not for the increased production of sugars, but the breakdown of acidity,"

This is mostly true to most citrus fruits except lemons.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Who's got Tangerines Ripening?
« on: December 28, 2022, 10:01:27 PM »
Eric,

I did compare the taste of Satsuma and the Ponkan, to me the Satsuma doesn't have much flavor. If it is picked after it looks nice an ripe (2-3wkks orange color) it may still be just watery tasting and not much sweetness. Satsuma that I grow seems to need to be leaft hanging on the tree for a long time until the skin starts to feel puppy, so maybe until January in my location. The Ponkan starts to ripen in November and continues hanging until January. I tastes good now, sweet with no acid/tartness. But if I wait until January it gets even better. So Ponkan wins in taste for me.

I'll post a few photos of the Satsuma fruits and Ponkan fruits later tonight. I only have one clementine (Fina) and it doesn't have much fruit this year. I grafted more clementine varieties so in a few years I should be able to compare the other good ones (Nules).

Good to hear that Ponkan is better than Satsuma.  My Satsuma is good but the fruits have a short pick up duration.  Early the fruits are sour or watery, vs too late to be dry, tough cell.   They have a clean flavor but never get very sweet .  At the same time, clementine fruits are slightly more sweet with much rich flavor, but the tree is hard to manage: easy to be alternative baring, and fruits get a lot of seeds if cross polinated by other citrus tree.

I have a small Oroblanco tree with has 10 fruits this year (I thinned them in spring).   I started sampling them in early November that was a little sour and bitter, about comparable to those purchased from stores.   Now in early December, they taste clean sweet with little sour and bitter remaining.

Ponkan mandrins are starting to ripen, some are already ripe and tasty.

That are a lot of ponkan.   When compared with Satsuma, which one  would you like more?   And how are they different? To me, Satsuma is good but the inner cell is a little tough, and the taste is not as rich as Clementine.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Do Satsumas get better with age?
« on: December 05, 2022, 01:59:15 PM »
It may have something to do with age or the ability to hold more fruit.  The more fruit a tree holds onto the smaller the fruit tend to be (at least for me).  The small fruit are sweeter and do not have the issues you are speaking of.  I give the larger satsumas to my chickens to eat.
I have a tree which I thinned the fruits in spring so about 12 of them kept on tree.   They ended up all very big (about 4:1 by volume to normal size) with rough rind, dry and tasteless inside.   I basically through of them out.

Normal clemintine or nule time is Dec to Jan, so they could be off season fruits, or produced in other weather areas, South America? Africa? or India.

If they contain a lot of seeds, they could be cross pollinated fruits, which could be bigger with rough rind.

sc4001992,

If you can keep the bees off from the clementine flowers, you will get seed free fruits, but lower yield.    That is how clementine farms do to produce seedless fruits.

It had a good growth after I put it into ground right after purchasing 6 - 7 years ago. Then I moved it to a new location about 6 feet away from a relative big fruit tree and ever since it grows very slow and thin. All my other citrus trees are very vigorous with the same fertilizer schedule. I even grafted it to other trees which are all fine.

How long have you had it? Is it in the ground or a container? What I've googled is that these top out between 5-15' tall when fully mature.

I have an Okitsu puchased from Costco.  The tree did not grow very big (reason unknown).   I have about 15 to 20 fruits which are turning color right now.  They taste rich with some sour and reasonable sweet.  So it is earlier than Owari which will be ready around end of Dec.

A good tree to have.

After comparing with other posts on this forums, I think it might be spider mite damage.

I had spider mite issues this winter. I washed all my trees under the shower and it got rid of most of them, but some trees still seem to suffer despite being cleared of mites.

I'll keep watching them closely and wash them off with water regularly to keep the mites away.

In my area, spider mites happen during hot, dry, and dust season, usually late summer or early fall.
