Are your lychees blooming?
« on: February 24, 2017, 07:15:27 PM »
Just wonder where everybodies lychees are now from east coast to west coast and everywhere in between.  My lychees are blooming for the first time in the GH.  According to lycheesonline.com they generally bloom in Dec-Jan.  It's been an unusually warm winter but in the GH it's 80-90 degrees in the day time and 50 at night.  Mine are just starting to push their spikes.

No blooms on my lychee trees.  The weather hasn't been cold enough.

No blooms here on my Brewster. Possible too much rain.

sweetheart put out blooms last month. I pruned them since I wanted to put
more size in the lychee. 2 weeks ago another bloom was pruned.
last week two mixed growths came out and I've let them grow for now

we had 3 days of a hard freeze, but otherwise a mild winter. the past month temps have been usually 50-80, usually lows of 60s.  I've been watering everyday or other day and have them in a pop up greenhouse and it kept putting out blooms when I want leaves.

nope..not a thing....

haven't seen or heard much lychee bloom around south Florida so far...seems it's pretty quiet for most. Getting into March has me a little concerned...it's getting late, right?

My big sweetheart (about 15 feet tall) has about 80% bloom. It started as a vegetative flush and then converted to bloom.

Both my Hak IP and sweetheart are blooming. The Sweetheart more heavily than the Hak IP at this point.

In general,  blloms are step 1.  The next is hoping for female flowers and lastly, but in no way least, fruit set....

Here on the West Coast, the Lychees are showing partial blooms. Leo's big Brewster is just starting to show some buds. I'll update with pics next time I visit.

Lots of blooms and fruit in 2015. Not one bloom in 2016.  :(

But lots of blooms this year on my Brewster, Sweetheart, Emperor, Mauritius, and Bengal lychee trees  :)

My Sweetheart has had a partial bloom for about a month. Maybe 1/4 on the east side of the tree. Tree is about 7-8 feet tall. Probably year five or six in ground. First time there have been flowers... So what do female flowers look like?

My two trees had a light crop last year.
Mauritius' Lychee flushed with new leaves about 2 weeks ago, girdled the lower branches last fall to no avail.
Maybe next year, really thinking of taking one tree down, or beat within an inch of its life with a chain like in the old days. its best crop was when Hurricane Wilma twisted the hell out of them.

My unknown variety looks to be blooming for the first time since I planted it 4 years ago. There are 3 stems with buds. They barely seem to have progressed in the last week. Is this normal and should I remove some of the buds.

I've noticed that blooms panicles tend to have a rapid push and then pause. they look knobby almost.

not sure how large your tree is. flowering/fruiting takes a lot of energy, which will slow down the trees growth in size. typically for smaller trees and young trees you should consider pruning blooms so the tree can concentrate on developing a heathy canopy and root system

Interesting observation Andrew and others,
my Mauritius tree is still young, 2 years in the ground from 15G pot and only about 6-7 ft tall. I also notice that the bloom has hardly making any progressed in the last 2 weeks; so I went ahead and prune about 50% of the blooms....let's see what happens?

This was taken Feb. 13, 2017

Same bloom today: Feb. 27, 2017

Hope this is normal...?

those look like mixed growth. the leaves are obvious. the little nubs are early blooms.

on a small tree I've tip pruned vegetative growths in Jan/feb until there is a cold front and then let the growths during colder weather grow out. I have successfully "changed" a branch from vegetative growth to a bloom before. don't think this can be done on a large scale though
