Those are nice looking trees, Jason.  My friend drove down to PIN about 2 months ago and bought me an Oro Negro.  It was an itty-bitty one but has since tripled in height, but it's still not as big as those. :)

Pine Island  Nursery says Oro Negro is large 1-2 lbs. (16-32 oz.) .............

In your experience is this accurate? Or does it come in more at the one pound size?

The Oro Negro season is very good because it is ripe during the cold months which is when you want to eat foods with more fat and oil and avocado is a nice vegetarian source for this. Oro Negro has decent oil& fat content. Warning - some Florida avocado have low oil content so are delicious but not suited for guacamole.
:
:

This is what Pine Island has to say about Oro Negro http://www.tropicalfruitnursery.com/avocado-viewer/pages/oro-negro.htm

Pine Island says--
Season: November-January
Fruit Size: 1-2 lbs. (16-32 oz.)
Flower Type: B
Tree Size: 30’ X 20’

'Oro Negro' means black gold in Spanish, which is an incredibly appropriate name for this fruit. It was a seedling sprout discovered in a commercial avocado grove here in Miami-Dade County, Florida in 1989 by grower Mike Hunt. He introduced us to this variety after 20 years of evaluation deciding it has great potential for dooryard or commercial use. It is likely a Monroe seedling having a similar shape and season, but probably crossed with a Mexican type which would explain the black skin. The flesh is rich and buttery with a creamy texture that is sure not to disappoint. .

Once again I have to say that your trees are so healthy and beautiful!  I bought a Hak Ip from Excalibur which had stopped growing in the container and the leaves had turned very pale green.  It has since come back to life and grown considerably. :)

Lychees can be very finicky in a pot.  When they are young they can have difficulty taking up nutrients through their roots and may require a foliar spray.  They also do not being pot bound.  A pot bound lychee uppotted will usually respond quickly with a new growth flush.

Thanks John for the kind words.

Check out this link on growing lychee trees from my site. http://www.pepesplants.com/lychee-trees.html

I have several lychee trees in bonsai pots and will post some pics soon. I started with a five foot Mauritius and worked it down to 3 feet. You can grow any fruit tree in containers. Nutrition, soil quality and pH are just a few of the finer points. Practice makes you a better grower. All the best!

Few know me but those that do usually like me! LOL

I have enjoyed plenty of  2 pounders for sure. It's a mixed bunch. Thin early and get nice big ones! This is one heck of a beautiful tasty avocado.

Only 2 trees left at my place!

My comments did and do not apply to bonsai as that is a totally different type of horticultural practice and plants are not treated the same compared to those either growing in pots for fruit production (for whatever reason that they don't plant the tree in the ground) or for keeping them in pots temporarily while they sit "in wait" to go in the ground.

When I saw the lychee tree at the nursery, I was hesitant to buy it because all the leaves had turned a pale green, but it seemed otherwise healthy and was a good size.  It didn't have a growth flush when first planted.  It took a couple of months.  Now it's doing great. :)  Hak Ip trees really get lush with their big leaves.

Thanks for the extra assistance today with the figs! I made it home safe. PLEASE hold a beautiful Oro Negro for me! I bought a small one today since I was afraid I wouldn't get one at all. Yours are much larger and branched, so it might save me a year before I get the fruit. I'll just have two for a while! With luck, I'll see you next weekend. Ed

It is always better to plant bigger and better and nicer looking that will be fruiting sooner. The other Oro Negro you can sell to someone. Put it in a larger pot and it grows bigger....it will sell itself next spring. Or you give it someone who will appreciate it and they (in turn) do a favor for you.

By chance I found a very nice large branched out Brogdon avocado at HD two days ago. Origin is Pine Island. I wish it were Oro Negro but it looks so good .... it is going in the ground in a day or two. Just had to sit back and meditate (like the Maharishi said to do) over where exactly to stick it in the ground.  8) 8) 8) Given that you hope it will be there 25-35 years you want it to be well situated as far as shade, getting sunlight and growth
