Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Huge Loquat Leaves
« on: January 20, 2022, 09:13:48 PM »
I heard Peluche is a hybrid with Eriobotrya bengalensis. If it's an F1 hybrid, and Peluche gets its big leaves from bengalensis, some of the F2 generation should have bigger leaves than Peluche, closer to bengalensis. One possible explanation.

I think my friend told me he collected Osage seed at Francheschi in the last month or so…..?
I haven't been able to find osage orange anywhere at CA nurseries. If someone has a line on some, let me know. I see some bare rooted grafted norris for $30 so I may do that, we'll see.

Oh dang, I hear osage roots SUPER easy too so I would love to find that plant there. I can't seem to find the plant map from Franchesci, I saw it once though. I'll have to cruise around.

This? Osage Orange is #211, a bit below the word "Road", middle right.

Maybe Posoqueria latifolia? If it's a Jacaratia, the palmate leaves should be pretty distinctive.

Leaves look the same as the Eugenia pyriformis I grew from seed.

1&2 are some yellow group, could be strigipes. 3 might be grimal.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: 100 gallon pot options?
« on: November 12, 2021, 11:27:03 AM »
It looks like it's on drip irrigation, so one option would be make a drip branch that waters more frequently for fabric pots, and to put it/them where you don't mind the leaching below. With a huge plastic container like that trash can I'd worry about the roots getting enough oxygen.

Parmentiera aculeata?

If anyone know of naturally occuring grafting of genetically different plants please let me know. The closest I have found are roots in costal high wind forests locking their roots together as anchour.

"It’s believed that pawpaws actively graft their roots together and share nutrients. " https://onegreenworld.com/pawpaw-growing-guide/

"Tree branches and more often roots of the same species will sometimes naturally graft; this is called inosculation." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grafting#Natural_grafting

Maybe the dead section was grafted, and died back to the graft years ago?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pruning Pitangatuba

I wouldn't. Pitangatubas are slow-growing with nice robust shapes. I used to pinch new growth points on the lower trunk of Eugenias, but they usually just regrow in the same spot on the next flush, but with worse symmetry.

In my experience pitangatubas are sensitive to overfertilization. If it can't seem to take up enough water that'd be my guess. It doesn't look bad to me at this point, but the leaves do look a bit thin/dehydrated.

So far it's a slow grower, but tougher than I expected. I started the seeds in spring of 2020. I think one of two came up. I forgot about it while I was acclimating it to sun, so it died in october 2020, but resprouted from the seed. Recently I've been giving it maybe a half day of fall sun. Probably overwatering it.

I don't see what's contradictory. Sounds like lulo is not heat tolerant, a cloud forest plant, while cocona does better with heat. There are lowland areas along the cost, like San Francisco, where the summers aren't too hot. I have some small lulos I started from seed this summer. They seem pretty tough so far. I also started dwarf tamarillo, and they look identical.

Maybe Inga uruguensis? Glad to hear there's a fruiting Inga in California.

I don't think those are feasible to grow indoors. Some small, tough plants like cacao or coffee sure, but this is a big tree (80 feet tall). I recommend starting some seeds of whichever you can find, and if they make it through a couple winters then worry about finding scions to graft.

Is Serrana different from Campo Ramon? I noticed Campo Ramon is a town in the highlands (serrana) of Misiones, and they look very similar. Is the phytosanitary certificate free with purchase? Thank you for posting this beautiful video btw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blmkB9E58ng

Edit: One more question, do your Jua Acu survive frost, or overwinter inside? I'm not sure if I should plant these in the ground now, or wait until spring. It will get down to about -3c here in a few months.

I'd believe it. Leaf shape looks fine. Not sure what else it'd be.

Nice plants, interesting to see the anthropophaga's leaves. Your yellow photo is swapped w/ grimal.
