Title: Question about shade
Post by: AndrewAZ on June 09, 2019, 12:23:01 AM
My cousin asked me a question that I couldn't answer.  He has a part of his yard that only gets 3-4 hours of sun a day.  He asked what kind of fruit he could grow.  He lives in Phoenix, zone 9b.
My first answer was nothing, but then I looked it up and blueberries, blackberries, loquat and pear where listed for shade.
I wanted to know if any of the plants we discuss on here would grow in shade in a desert zone 9b?

Depending on the type of shade citrus might work ok.

I was going to say citrus. I have a owari satsuma mandarin tree squeezed between two buildings that fruits very well with only a few hours of sun.

shade is good for most plants, you'll have to water less but wait longer for growth

In shadier conditions trees which evolved to be in full sun will tend to grow taller and thinner too, reaching for light. If you have warm  enough conditions or even under other trees Monstera deliciosa prefers shade.
