Can I compost unripe mango fruits that fell
« on: May 20, 2018, 02:11:11 PM »
I had a great fruit set this year with way more fruit on many trees than they had ever seen.
Many are dropping fruits leaving just one or two per panicle (fewer in each cluster).
One entire branch broke off under the weight of fruit and some wind.
Now I have so many small to medium size green mangos.
I am thinking of throwing some of the fruits into my composting heap.
Is this a good or terrible idea?
In searching to see if this question had been asked on the forum I saw a post from 2014 where someone was concerned about spreading antraconose Can I expect the heat of cooking compost to kill of pathogens?

As far as crappy immature mangoes spreading anthracnose in your compost bin I have no certain answer.
I run over mine with the lawnmower to fertilize the lawn which they do minimally.

This is your problem with recycling any old rotten veggies and fruits. Any kind of kitchen waste. They are 90+% water so can make little impact on making your soil black and fertile and full of micro organisms. BUT Chipped up trees and shrubs will make your soil black due to all the strong fibrous plant structure in them. Plus they have mined (via deep roots) micro-elements from the soil and they these are chelated micro-elements.

If you have pigs or chickens in your back yard then the situation changes. They will thrive on backyard mango tree|fruit tree waste and kitchen waste. They will eat and thrive on stuff you and your family scrape off your plates. Which makes wasting food not feel so guilty.

There's a video from Chris at Truly tropical that showed how she threw all of her mango scraps around a sick tree and it had an amazing recovery.

OK, into the bin they go.
The rest will adorn the base of a few trees.

It happened again.  Another branch this time.  Also laden with fruit.
Fortunately in this case it was not a complete break and I hope I can propo it up and still get the fruits to mature.
Off with the branch after the season.
Planned on reshaping the tree anyway.  It was very wide with the weight at the end...  Physics took over.
