Is my jujube tree dying?
« on: September 30, 2018, 07:42:52 PM »
I just planted this sugarcane jujube tree about 5 months ago. It had many flowers but most of it fell off and only gave about 10 fruits which are really tasty. But starting a month ago I see that the leaves are turning yellow, and I don't know if it's going into dormant state or it is just dying. Please advise.

I don’t think so. It’s just loosing leaves.  Eventually you’ll have no leave and it will look more dead but it’s not.  It’s one of those trees that will be very hard to die.

When the days get shorter the Chinese jujube will lose it's leaves and go dormant.
When the days get longer in the Spring it will come out of dormancy. The brown branches
look ok but the green spindly branches may also drop? I do notice it looks like the leaves were
burnt pretty bad before the tree is losing them? Could be salt in the water or too much fertilzer?
Jujubes are very hardy trees, in Florida you can just about cut back everything and the next year it
comes back. Last year Huricane Irma really took a toll on my two Indian jujubes and I pruned them
way back and they exploded this summer and are full of flowers now. The Indian type flowers now and
produces around Xmas in Florida. The best thing is I don't water or fertilize and the tree is fine. No
maintenace except for pruning.

Thanks for the inputs. I will stop using store bought fertilizer. Is meal-worm casting a good natural fertilizer since I found out about a place in Compton that sells 40lb bags for $10.

You should check your ph in soil. Natural fertilizers change the soil structure.
I can see from your pictures a deficiency in Mg.

Jujubes are going into dormancy now.  I still suggest, however, using organic fertilizers.

I have Sugarcane & Honeyjar.  Of the 2, the edge goes to Honeyjar for flavor, but Sugarcane is great, as well

I know the place in Compton, Rainbow Mealworms.  I have several bags of their mealworm castings at my home.  I'll sell you 2 bags for $16
