When we do canopy change the avocado we decapitate the tree and the trunk is exposed to the sun. I have tried white wash with no so good results.  Also new small trees get cooked in the field

Also dragon fruit specially at this time of the year do get sun burn and the fungal issues come right after the sun burn.

Has any one tried these products? Purshade and Surround by Nova Source http://novasource.com/  or any other produts to prevent UV damage?

Very interesting. I have the same problem. Every time I do a heavy pruning, I have to cover with branches to prevent sunburn, and it's a pain in the neck. Any idea how much Purshade is?

I have not used that, just shade cloth on smaller bushes. For my dragonfruit, I do plan on attaching some poles to my dragonfruit stand so I can hang the shade cloth.  Probably too much a hassle for larger trees though.

Carlos, I wonder what you are using for "whitewash" on your trees.  While not as sun intensive here in central coast of CA, I use white water-based latex paint applied heavily in two coats. The white latex is reflective, but also puts a rubberized seal on the tree branches.  It will last several years and stretches a bit as the limb grows.  Buds do penetrate it.  As I said however, our sun is quite different than what you are exposed to.

The tree in the picture along with many others got a latex paint pure with a commercial gun and still you see the damage.
See, when you do canopy change you get two sun "hits"  One when you decapitate the tree, second then you remove the water shoots to keep 4-5 shoot to graft on. .
All of that takes place in our winter. You get days of full sun not a cloud in the sky. like today, High UV cooking the trees. Also my dragons suffer.

How fast after cutting did you spray paint ,was it very hot and sunny I feel the burn happens very fast, its all most seems like as soon as you cut one tree that you should paint it then move on to the next tree. I had this same problem.I have used both those products but not for stumped trees surround= kaolin clay and pureshade=calcium cabonate .I don't  feel they last long enough maybe mix heavy nufilm17?

Hi Carlos,
There's a guy in California that has a YouTube channel under the name of  IV Organic. He sells a 3-in-1 tree guard product to protect fruit trees from sunburn, insects, and is a pruning sealer. Check out the following YouTube video.         https://youtu.be/B-QLNCIFo5o

I do have that product, a gallon of it. I'm planing to do about 30 trees this summer. Home to use 3-4 different products to see what's best and more economical. That 3-1 is very expensive.

This is interesting. They are claiming that it lasts 12 months.

I doubt that it will work better than latex paint. In the guys youtube video you can barely see residue on the tree one year after! coolseal ? calcium carbonate+ latex

Latex paint alone does very little for me.  I have been planning to do several test:
The 3-1 product.
Latex paint with Kaolin (Surround)
LAtex Paint with Ceramic Paint Additive several products out there

I use Surround, 40# bag.  Cheap from Crop Protection Services.  Several apps also works well against hard to control pests like stinkbugs or flat footed bugs.

Surround definitely is going to get tried. To what crop you apply it?

Latex paint seems good on trunks.  Are people putting surround on avocado foliage?  I experimwnted a bit witb some and find it doesnt come off easily.  Not sure I really want it on there for many months at a time.

Debating if I should make that investment for the IV organics vs the white latex paint...iv organics is pricey.

I have tried Surround on my peaches for the curculio and it worked, except the stuff doesn't come of the fuzz of the peach when you pick the peach. Traded one problem for another.  It also seemed to deter squirrels from taking the immature peaches.

I will have to try on my pomegranates for the stink/leaf-footed bugs.

Permethrin will nail them.  Make sure you add a surfactant to your spray.  I have 2 large pomegranate trees that were loaded and it worked great.

When painting with a brush the paint adheres a lot better than when you spray the paint .There is a dust film on the trees bark that gets mixed in the paint with the brush .
